My unit was dead also.....So I checked outlet first...It was good....Then I tried the 10 minute disconnect and reconnected unit......Saw Unit had power on LCD screen....Hit ON button on remote after changing to HDD and unit works perfectly again....That fix saved me 75 bucks for repair center to do same thing...Glad Funai makes units that shut off before damage occurs...Unit just needed to cool down hard drive or circuitry before it sensed it was ok again....When plugged in it is still technically powered even tho you dont see it on the LCD screen of the unit...
If it is under warranty, submit to an authorised service centre for a warranty repair - at virtually zero cost to you, since its power supply has obviously failed (take advantage of the warranty if you can, this way you can have it fixed quickly as well as virtually no cost). Unfortunately, the power supply is not a repairable item in every case, so you may have a board replaced. Here's hoping you do have a warranty on this one - it is not a cheap repair!
Fingers crossed if it is only 3 months old from brand new - that you get a working unit out of this.

I discovered that there is a reset switch on the inside of this unit. If you remove the cover, you'll see a small push button switch on one of the circuit boards that is labeled "reset". Press that with the unit plugged in and it comes back to life.
If it is under warranty, the user/owner should NOT remove any covers - this may void any warranty, as well as the slight possibility of damage/shock hazard (even with the unit unplugged from the power point) which is why I suggested that the asker submit their unit to an authorised repair centre, rather than attempt to undertake any service themselves. It is better to take advantage of manufacturer's warranties as much as possible where applicable.

I found only two places that would service my unit within a reasonable driving distance and I live in a heavily populated area. Neither place would tell me how much it might cost to fix it, or even for them just to look at it. They would not tell me if it would be covered under warranty and they would not tell me their hourly service labor rates. Both places just told me to drop the unit off and they would call me with a diagnosis. I decided not to allow them to sexually abuse my wallet. If that's what a warranty got me, I decided to void it. I am an electrical engineer so I know how to open something up and not get hurt. I don't advise this for people who don't have the right training. I popped the cover and checked the fuse, which was fine. Then I found the reset button I referred to before. I have never seen such a button located where only a service person is meant to get at it. I don't know of course, but I strongly doubt that if I'd taken the unit to one of the authorized service centers they would have said "No charge - just pushed an internal button". My experience may or may not be the norm but I think one thing is clear: Magnavox has a product with a defect that makes it shut down when exposed to a power glitch.
Mine was under warranty but I decided to do the "reset" and hurray it worked!!! We actually unpluged the Magnovox, removed cover, pressed reset button while the Magnovox was unplugged, then plugged it in and back to normal. It works!!!
after a power outage, unit would not turn on. Called Magnavox. Level 1 rep said it was a manufacturer's defect and fully covered by warranty. Level 2 rep said "No, the power outage is listed under "act of God" in the warranty, and thus not covered. Found this website, and with the advice of an electrician friend, left the unit unplugged for a week, opened it up, found the RESET button on the circuit board behind the HDD, pressed it, plugged it in and it whirred back to life.
Unit was dead when i went to use it.... I knew the outlet was good so I tried the disconnect for 10 minutes... Then i plugged it in and it had power and when i hit the ON button it fired up normal again..Saved me 75 bucks labor for them to do the same thing..
I love this unit so Im glad thas all it was.......That was way too easy....Funai is usually a pretty good product so Im glad it apparantly sensed a surge problem and shut itself down without needing repairs and then rebooted itself...after my 10 minute cool down adtre unplugging it..
MY MAGNAVOX MDR515H JUST WENT OUT. I TRIED THE SOLUTION SUGGESTED BY revlynch AND IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. THE RESET BUTTON ON THIS UNIT IS LOCATED TO THE SIDE OF THE HARD DRIVE UNIT RIGHT BEHIND THE FRONT PANEL OF THE UNIT. IT IS LABELED "RESET". THANKS FOR THE HELP
We lost our MDR515H after a power outage. Would not turn on. No lights, no action. The disconnect/wait option did nothing.
Removed the cover with unit unplugged, tested the power fuse at left rear of unit - fuse OK. Then found the magic Reset button in middle of circuit board to left of the hard drive a few inches behind front panel as Nomens100a and revlynch report.
Pressed reset button with power still off. Put the cover back on and tested it.

Lost all channel-scan presets and all the future-timed calendar settings as well as the clock but those are easily reprogrammed. Unit powered right up. All HDD content is still there. Success!

My 5 plus year old MDR515H was dead after utility turned power on/off at least 6 or 8 times in one day. Would not turn on, blank, dark screen. It was plugged into a quality surge proctor, every thing else survived no problems. Figured it might be a power supply fuse, took cover off, fuse is okay. Then I found this forum and and located the reset button, facing the front of the unit it was on the circuit board to the left of the hard drive, it was labeled "RESET". With the machine plugged in I pressed the reset button and the display came on. I pressed the "ON" button and the machine powered up. I put cover back on reinstalled on TV, everything is working fine. I did not lose channel presets but I did lose pre-programmed recording selections, everything recorded on hard drive was still there and played back. Also had to reset clock.I also noticed two of the capacitors on the power supply board were starting to swell and had small reddish brown stains on their tops. These were the 6.3VDC cap's. Looked them up on Amazon, pack of 20 $8. I have a friend that can replace these for me before they die. Over all a success story, Like I said this DVR is over 5 years old, I paid $350 for it, they're still selling the same model number today for $1,200.
Unplug it and wait 10 minutes. if it tries to turn on and doesn't you probably need to change 3 capacitors in the power supply behind the DVD mechanism. you'll see the domed tops and possibly brown / yellow crust. I believe they are 3300uF 6.3vdc I would use 10v parts if possible. I took old parts off of a PC mainboard and it still worked.
From other consumers with similar problems, it seems likely that there are some machines with power supply issues. If it isn't the power fuse (most likely it is not), then it will be a power supply problem. Others say that labor on this unit is only for 90 days. That makes the cost of repair rather expensive if you own the product past that time frame when that occurs. Because of the nature of this level of quality on this brand, I suggest an extended warantee on future purchases from a reliable company. That should cover you for 3 years parts & labor. One last thought. Should you get your machine operational again; This product has a built-in method of automatically going into play mode for everything. Should you find the machine operating but not responding to commands....always hit the STOP button FIRST. Then try a command. It's odd but that's the way the thing plays.
I have looked at all the solutions. I had decided to pay the 75 dollar charge required for repair, had a box and all the labels made for shipping, and tried powering the unit up one more time. It powered up and has not failed since! Thanks for the help and will post again if it fails. thanks again.
Thank you for your response. I hope that is the end to your problem but should it reoccur, it probably means a weak power supply. If still operating within a 7-10 days, suggest you write or call the repair company and see if you can get a refund or an extension on your repair order.
I have had my mdr515h for years now. I love it. The common problem is when power is interrupted even briefly it will turnoff and not want to turn on. When this occurs unplug it and wait 10 minutes (I never timed it) and plug it back in and this should solve that problem.
The major problem I had is after years of use one day it got really had to turn on and was acting unusual, trying to start but not. This problem was solved by replacing 3 capacitors near the back panel.I believe they were 3300uF 6v. had to remove the DVD and several other parts to get the PS board out but it was $3 worth of parts and a new unit would cost $300...hope this helps someone.
