When I go to print, a box pops up and says "Service Error 5100". It says to turn my printer off and then back on. This does not fix it. I lost my manual so I have no idea what to do. Thanks!

Service Error 5100 means that something is blocking the ink carts or head.. with printer off move the ink cartridges in the well by hand all the way to the middle of the printer then turn the printer on.

  1. turn printer off
  2. turn printer on
  3. remove both carts
  4. turn printer off
  5. turn printer on
  6. replace carts
  7. turn off
  8. turn on
that should clear up the issue if not you need to try replacing the cartridges or removing and replacing the inkwell (place where the carts fit in)

Had the same problem, i just replaced the black ink cartridge which was finishing at that time and resetted the counters. No problems after that. Not sure whether this will help though.

SOURCE: Error message: Service error 5100 on my new Canon MP160 Printer

Error Code.........Description
5000 ...................Home position error
5100 ...................Carriage control error
5200 ...................Head temperature sensor error
5400 ...................Printer temperature sensor error
5600 ...................No cartridge error
5C00 ...................Purging operation error
5200 ...................Scanner cartridge error

As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100 (or E-2-2 on the LCD display) Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on) Hope this helps some of you out.
good luck (^_^)

SOURCE: regarding service error 5100 in canon ip1880 printer

1. Try to reset the ink counter by iptool software (sometimes it help)
2. Unplug the usb cable and then turn off and on your printer for a few times.
service error 5100 seems like indicating of mecanism exhausted or out of buffer ram in the printer. You should reduce the amount of pages to print at one time.
Good luck.

5100 is a Carriage Home Position Error.
try cleaning the plastic strip that runs the length of the carriage, it may be contaminated.
Use alcohol and a swab.

SOURCE: CANON IP 1300 SERVICE ERROR 5100

ERROR 5100 means that there is some foreign object blocking your ink cartridge carriage that disables it from moving. It may be a piece of paper or a scotch tape or a staple wire. You may try cleaning also the encoder strip with a moist tissue paper. Furthermore, you may also try cleaning CAREFULLY the contact points of the cartridge holder and the cartridge itself (those shiny bronze pins) with a moist lint-free cloth.
