Hello,

First you must configure your calculator to perform 3D graphics
Press MODE
1.The first line shown is Graph. Unfold the hidden menu list with the right arrow and choose Graph 5:3D
2. Press ENTER to validate.

Now you must define the surface you want to draw
1. Press the [diamond] key then [Y=] to get a list of function names, the first of which is z1
2. Enter the following function (or your own) z1=(x^3*y-y^3*x)/390
( x cubed times y -y cubed times x) divided by 390.
3 Press ENTER.

Graph the function
Press the [diamond] key then [GRAPH]

The graphing screen displays progress in %. When it is finished you will see a weird sombrero.

Hope it helps

Error Dimension mismatch on ti89

Error Dimension Mismatch:
Two or more arguments must be of the same dimension. For
example, [1,2]+[1,2,3] is a dimension mismatch because the
matrices contain a different number of elements.

How can you graph a spherical shape when z axis is predeined as z(x,y) ?

You need to set the graphing mode to 3D. In 3D graphing the function is represented as z(x,y)=function of the variables x and y.
Here are a few screen capture to show you how to set the thing up.
Read the calculator manual.

How do you graph this equation r(t)=cos(t) * i + sin(t)* j + t *k (x,y,z)= (i,j,k) on a ti89

The calculator does not support 3D parametric functions, but there is a procedure that will help you do that. Here is the link to the page that describes it.

How do you graph y = the inverse contangent of x?

The cotangent function is not implemented on the TI84PLUS native OS and consequently you will not find its inverse function on the calculator. However, there exits an equivalence (definition) between arc cotangent(x) and arc tangent (1/x).
Thus cot^(-1)(X)= tan^(-1)(1/X),

Be careful. Since it is a multivariate function, some authors define the principal branch in the domain [0, PI], while others define the domain on [-Pi/2, Pi/2]. You will have to consult your textbook, or the documents you are using to find out the domain of the principal branch.

Setup Graph type
  • Press [MODE] key.
  • In Mode set up screen, make sure that the angle unit is the degree.
  • Use the arrows to move cursor to 3rd line to highlight {degree} and press [ENTER]
  • On same screen, verify that Func is highlighted.
  • If it is not, use arrow to highlight Func and press [ENTER] to validate.
  • Do not worry if you do not have exactly the same screen as in the screen picture (We may have different OS Versions)

Entering the functions to draw.
  • Press [Y=] to enter function editor.
  • Type in a function
  • Press [ENTER] at the end of each function.
  • Before pressing [GRAPH], make sure that all the = signs that define the functions to be graphed are highlighted white on black. If one is not highlighted, use arrow to move cursor on the sign and press [ENTER].
  • In the screen capture 4 functions are slated to be drawn.

Selecting the Graph Style (You may ignore this now, because it is unimportant for just one graph)

  • Select the graph style: The small piece of line to the left of a Y that defines a function is the style.
  • Move cursor on it and press [ENTER] .
  • Each [ENTER] (on same line) selects another style.
  • On the next screen you have all the styles available on the calculator.
  • Do not select the bubble on line 6: It is for animations. It will not leave a trace at the end of the plot.

Drawing the Graphs
  • Press [GRAPH] to see the graphs.
  • If one of them is missing, verify that its = is still highlighted, then use the [WINDOW] to set the Window dimensions,

ZOOMING
You can also press [ZOOM] to adjust.

The selection 6:ZStandard sets the dimensions as on the screen Titled Window (above).

In the window screen you can set Xmin=-180, Xmax=180, Xscl=10, Ymin= -0.6, Ymax= 1.5, Yscl=1. The minus here is the change sign (-) to the right of the [.] dot.

How do you plot two liner equations on a ti-84?

I use one of the graphing APPS or do through a program. I have a users manual for TI 84 silver Edition that shows you how to archive\ unarchive to run programs here at this site. Usually, I tell people to just forget about the programs and use the simple concepts so, that they could operate their calculator better. But, if you notice in those program are actually more powerful than the programs you get on the web, because I wrote them to be flawless, or I only used programs that I knew would not clash and were very well written. Won't y1=(2/5)x-(11/5) and -3x+8 work?

y1=(2/5)x-(11/5) and -3x+8

Deleting the 3D function

I heard of instructor disabiling APPS but, not functions. One reason I can't see that is I can download a program that does the same thing and hide it w/ instructor even knowing its there unless he ran a search in ever folder or open a lot of programs
