Yes it is necessary to install the device drivers to get the motherboard functioning properly, eg the audio, video, LAN, modem etc.
You can download thedevice drivers for your computer from the motherboard manufacturer's WEB site.
I cannot give you the link to the motherboard manufacturer's WEB site because youhave not provided me with the details of the make and model of your motherboard.

Go to realtek.com, they have the audio drivers available for free download!

Just select which driver type you need, and select the operating system that you are using, as they have different ones for each operating system.

Download and install, and then reboot!

Your audio should now be working as it is supposed to !

Here's the link, you can select the necessary drivers from the list (not the download button at the top). It would be better to assist you if you mentioned the Operating System you are using, the available drivers from this site may not be compatible with Windows Vista and XP. Good luck.

Compaq using proprietary motherboards. You would need to get the drivers/bios files from the Compaq website. Just click on the support link and lookup your specific system. All the available drivers/bios files will be available there for free download. Hope this helps.
