I also decided to update my lights recently. I research many modern models and chose Shark 500's USB, it provides very cool characteristics! Weight is only 100g with battery 2400mAh! If you interested you can get more details here - company url.
The power light was going on and off. Ordered a new battery and replaced the old battery. Now a new problem started. When the unit was turned on with the new battery it would shut down immediately. Would not even cycle on and off any more. Thought it was the new battery. Tested the voltage on the new battery and it around 14 volts. I put the old battery back in and it no longer pulsed on and off any more. Further investigation it was noticed that a little white plug that plugs into the circuit board had come loose when replacing the battery. This little plug is located right by the negative terminal on the battery. It is in a very tight spot and if you push the battery into place this plug will become loose. Reseated this little plug and that solved the two problems. First replacing the defective battery and then reseating that loose plug.
Remove the negative battery clamp from the battery for a few minutes, if the problem has been fixed the light will not come back for that issue. It will clear by itself (if it is fixed) after a predetermined number of driving cycles if you decide not to disconnect the battery.
If you put a battery on your charger and both red and green lights flash it is indicating that battery is defective. There may be a short in the battery or they just may be too old and worn out to charge anymore. If the charger is reading the battery as defective it will not charge the battery. The only fix is to buy new batteries.

If the charge count on the batteries is under 300, Makita will replace them. Makita has a known defect in this battery that causes the battery to shut down before it is dead. So as of now they are exchanging ones with low use.
If they are truly defective and makita won't replace, you have to open them, find the dead cell or blown fuse, and replace. Search youtube makita battery for a video on repairing this battery. But once the red and green lights on the charger flash, the the battery can't be charged on a Makita charger -- it's been locked. So use a third party charger.
