I have an hp Compaq nc6400, when I turn it on a message comes up: CDBOOT: Cannot boot from CD -- Code: 5. What do I have to do to fix this problem? Nothing works on the keyboard at this point.

If its in warranty go to vendor, it not try replacing battery, try another adapter , it its still not working you need to check laptop pawer supply unit, "if you have idea of disassembling it", go for it
I too had same problem and I guess you too have the same problem as mine. VGA adapter is not working anymore. Hardware failure. You may need to change the motherboard.
according to the maintenance guide. If you are using an external drive try to reseat it. If is from the hard drive you can try to use the CD or diskette to boot. If not the hard drive or system board need replacement. Try to get a boot disk of windows (installation cd, not upgrade but the full windows) and try booting the cd by pressing the space bar repeatedly. Good luck
