Since you can boot in safe mode, teh you should try using the SYSTEM RESTORE to take it back to the day the problem started, try that first.
For example of XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

Hi,

Looks like an issue with either display or system is overheating. Please try the below steps.

1. Shut down the computer
2. Keep on tapping F8 key as us press the Power button to turn on the computer.
3. Choose safe mode using the arrow keys on the keyboard and hit Enter Key
4. Stay on the safe mode to see if the screen is going blank, if not
5. A system restore should help to fix the issue. Let me know!

Lap top wont work at all says hard drive problem detected and in safe mode. safe mode comes uo in all 4 corners of screen

Hello,

You mentioned it boot in safe mode, if it's showing the taskbar where the start button is, then do the system restore. Click start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore. Select the previous date that the laptop was working fine the laptop will restart by itself once done. If this process does not resolve the issue, do system recovery (reformat) using the recovery disc that came with the laptop.

goodluck.

First try to start on safe mode.
to start on safe mode:
reboot your Pc
hold F8 while system starts
and when you are taken to safe mode
choose start with safe mode option
i may take you in to your desktop.
if it does not work then
you need can either do whole backup in to another external drive using ghost software or
just take off HDD and plug in to External hard drive reader (you can buy in market in cheap price) and plug in to another computer and copy your whole profile so you will have all data whatever you have on it.

Good luck.
