First, go to Panasonics Website Download all Firmware and software updates. Install in your recorder. The Website will tell you how to make a Disc to do this., Then Clean the inside of your unit of Dust etc., Clean Laser eye with rubbing alcohol use q-Tips. If your unit does not read the Firmware updates do clean as described first.
The laser readerwriter is most likely burned out, it is the most common failure. The option of repair is not really feasible as the cost of new is really low.
I mainly use my DVR to record TV shows on DVD-RAM discs (Panasonic brand or Maxell). I've had no problems with the DVD-RAM discs. However, today when I put a DVD-R disc in the recorder, I got an "Incompatible Disc" error message. I tried a second disc from the same set, and got the same message. I tried out some of the DVD-Rs that I recorded last year and I could read them. Tried a DVD-RAM. That was OK. So, I tried another DVD-R disc. That one is OK. I don't know if the problem is that these DVD-Rs are getting a little old (2 years??) or if the recorder is developing its own problems reading discs.
I have the same unit with the same exact problem. I ended up taking it in for repair and it's now working perfectly. I paid $100 for the repair. I dropped the unit off and picked it up myself. I think $30 additional is charged for shipping and handling in US.

I my DVD-HR735 wont recognise any discs at times, and is getting worse. I've now discovered (out of frustration) that if I tip the front up to between 30-45 degrees, it will play all the discs it says were unreadable. I've started jamming three dvd boxes under the front of the machine when i want to play dvds.
My recorder has stopped accepting NEW DVD-RW discs and ejects them. There is no problem loading DVD-R (new or recorded)or loading previous recorded DVD-RW, initializing and re-recording I have tried several different DVD-RW makes. Puzzling??
No, DVD-RAM disc recorded on the DVD Camcorder will not play back on every drive.
Some of the new DVD-ROM drives designed to be compliant with the new DVD-RAM book2 standards will playback discs recorded on the DVD Camcorder. Many previous DVD-ROM drives on the market that came out before the DVD-RAM standard was released will not play back discs recorded on the DVD Camcorder.
HITACHI manufactures DVD-ROM drives for some PC manufactures as OEM products.
HITACHI model GD-7500 DVD-ROM has DVD-RAM read/write compatibility.
