SOURCE: cant access my netgear router config screen

I have found my own solution to this problem. A cheap Lynksys wireless. I have found that it is fruitless trying to talk to netgear or Apple reps, one never gets to talk to someone really knowledgeable, and it is too frustrating having to step through their scripted questionaire. In addition there are a lot of well-intentioned people that can send you in a wild chase. No worth the waste of time when a $40 or less Lynsys would solve the problem. Good luck to the ones who still have the problem and still want to pursue a solution. Thank you to those who tried to help.

Hold reset button in the back of the router. If that doesn't fully reset it, unplug it, hold the reset button for about 10seconds and plug it back it with the reset button held in for a further 5-10 seconds, release. Then should be back to factory settings.

How do i connect my WG302 to my laptop using a console cable?

if Windows
go to dosprompt on p.c or start run cmd <press the enter key>
type in ipconfig <press the enter key>
was the ip address of the laptop 192.168.0.210 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 ?
note the ip address of the laptop and the subnet mask
If the ip address is not 192.168.0.210 then go into the network settings and set the laptop up with 192.168.0.210 and then make it a static ip address.
go to dosprompt on p.c or start run cmd <press the enter key>
type in ipconfig <press the enter key>
was the ip address of the laptop 192.168.0.210 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 ? (if not restart the laptop ) and check again
Next question how did you connect the wg302 directly to the laptop was it directly connected or was it through a network switch or network hub. Most likely the Cable router or DSL router has a DCHP server assigning different ip address lease range. You can either change the ip address of the access point device to one in the original current router lease range and assign it as static for the wireless access point device in the dchp lease table or assign the wireless access point with the second ip address as an example 10.0.0.2 and make sure the router dchp server allocates above 10.0.0.20 then temporarily connect router to laptop and temporily set laptop with 192.168.0.210 and then log into access point and change ip address to 10.0.0.2 for wireless access point device and turn off its dchp server. Then change laptop to use dhcp while connected into network hub or network switch with original router and restart laptop wired back into original normal network.

How do I determine actual threats to my network while reviewing my wireless/network Router's Event Log?

Logs are meant to see the activities handled by your router. However, to determine any threat you can check for the IP address of the devices you have connected to your router. You can determine if any one else is trying to access your router by their ip address only.
Note down the IP address for all the devices that you have connected to your router. Than match the your devices IP addresses with IP addresses you found in the logs.
Matching IP address: Means your devices accessing the router. Unmatched IP Address: Someone else's devices trying to access your router.
You can always add security by using WEP/WPA2 key security. For further security you can encrypt the keys.

To Configure the Router with Internet Access

Connect to one of the wireless router/access point's LAN Ethernet ports, turn off its DHCP server, and give the wireless router a static IP on your LAN:

  1. Connect a PC directly to a LAN port on the wireless router with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Power on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Reboot the PC.
  4. Log in to the wireless router though a browser. (Usually 192.168.1.1, with User Name = admin and Password = password, unless you changed them from the defaults).
  5. Go to the LAN IP menu and disable the wireless access point's DHCP server by unchecking Use router as DHCP server.
  6. Select LAN IP, and change the IP to 192.168.1.99.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings. You will lose the connection to the wireless router/access point , since its IP changed.
  8. Log in to the wireless router/access point with the URL: http://192.168.1.99
  9. Connect one of the wireless router's Local (LAN) ports to your existing network

I have a Dell desktop and a Dell Laptop Inspiron E1705 both run Windows XP Home. My internet connection is Comcast cable. The Desktop runs of the comcast modem and for the laptop I have a comcast router...

Dell laptop will have a dell wireless application that will be controlling the wireless adaptor.
You can open that from Start - Programs (or all programs) - Dell - Dell wireless utility (or in some case intel proset utility). open that and you can use it to connect to your wireless network or you can disable it and allow windows to manage the wireless adapter.

If you have any issues in doing the same please reply to this post.

Thank you for contacting Fixya.

First make sure that wireless LED status is on on router.
Then if it is ok then uninstall wireless driver from device manager then reinstall it.

Need basic step-by-step instructions on how to install my router.

  5. Go to the LAN IP menu and disable the wireless access point’s DHCP server by unchecking Use router as DHCP server.
  6. Select LAN IP, and change the IP to 192.168.1.99.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings. You will lose the connection to the wireless router/access point , since its IP changed.
  8. Log in to the wireless router/access point with the URL: http://192.168.1.99
  9. Connect one of the wireless router's Local (LAN) ports to your existing network.
This completes the wireless router/access point configuration.
  • You can now log in to the wireless router/access point at its new address of http://192.168.1.99 and configure wireless features such as WEP and Access Control List
  • UPnP, DMZ, Port Forwarding, and Port Triggering are not used on the wireless router/access point, and it doesn't matter how they are configured.
  1. Configure the LAN IP address to be within the same subnet as your PCs.
    • Take care not to use an IP address already being used.
    • Limit the number of addresses in the DHCP range and assign an IP address outside of the range to the router you want to use as the Access Point.
  2. Disable DHCP on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Connect one of the LAN ports on the wireless router/access point to a LAN port on the Router.
  4. Configure the SSID and any security settings on the wireless PCs to match the wireless router/access point's SSID and security settings.
a. SSIDs must be the same on all wireless devices. (These are case-sensitive: netGEAR is not the same as NETGEAR.)
b. Tip: Make sure the wireless PCs can connect before configuring WEP, WPA-PSK, or other wireless encryption.

Can't access 192.168.1.1

Most of the NETGEAR devices, except ReadyNAS products and Fully Managed switches, have the following default username and password:
  • Username = admin
  • Password = password
    • For older devices, password = 1234
If you have changed the default password and have forgotten the password, you may need to reset the NETGEAR device to factory default settings.
Reset for most routers with a reset button on the rear panel
Write down configuration information such as IP addresses, security keys, opened ports and services, etc., that you modified. (The default username is admin and the password is either password or 1234. Try these before resetting the router.)
  1. Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks. This takes about 10 seconds. (To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
  2. Release the button.
  3. Wait for the router to reboot.
  4. Log in with the default password. If the router configuration was not cleared, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.
  5. Unplug the router's power.
  6. Press and hold the reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
  7. Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
  8. Wait for the router to reboot.
  9. Log in with the default password.
Or you will need to update the firmware to rest the router.
