Hello. I have a Kitchen Aid mixer made by Hobart between 1975 and 1978. It is a stand mixer with a 5-quart bowl that lifts and locks into place. While it was kneading a bread dough, the motor disconnected from the dough hook which stopped moving. I could still hear the motor turning in the head, so I suspect that the gears are stripped. You shouldn't need to mess about with washers, it almost sounds like there is an incorrect part in the mix. Have you contacted the previous owner about the issue?
Find a local Kitchen Aid service agent and they may be able to say what is wrong just by looking at it.
I expect spacers in between the pedestal and lower case would solve the problem but that's not a proper solution.

Kitchenaid does not make a 4 or 5 quart bowl that would fit your 6 quart mixer, but other 3rd party companies do!
You may be in luck.
I haven't seen this bowl in person, but it apparently will fit your 6qt mixer. Here is a link to a page selling the mentioned attachment. It comes in a set, with appropriate wire-whip attachments:

smell the motor housing for any burnt smell.suggest you buy a new one.theire not worth fixing

The KSM5 and the KSM150 are different mixers. They are both 5 quart mixers and use the same gearing and motor. However the bowl design is different. The KSM5 is a 5 quart bowl lift, which means the bowl locks into the arms of the mixer and raises towards the head of the mixer, where the ksm150 mixer is a artisan mixer, which is also a 5quart mixer, but the head of the mixer tilts back and the bowl twists into the base ring to lock into place. These two mixers will take different bowls and beaters.

Replace the plastic bowl lift part on that crankhandle inside the pedestal.

If the base is not holding the bowl properly then only a replacement base plate or another bowl is going to fix it. The base plate is held onto the pedestal with 3 Philips head screws.

Either the grooves on the bowl lock plate are worn out, or the grooves on the actual bowl are worn out. I would start with replacing the bowl lock plate. Here is a link to the part: KitchenAid Mixer Bowl Lock Plate 4163032

This part is really easy to replace, it is held into place with three screws, remove those screws (make sure to hang onto those you will need them to re-install the new part). then you should be able to pop the old plate out. To install the new plate like up the screw holes, and press into place, sometimes you need to lightly tap it into place with a rubber mallet as it is suppose to be a very tight fit.

Once that has been replaced your bowl should lock into place tightly. However there is always a chance that the bowl has been worn down and may need to be replaced. Here is a link to the 4.5 Quart bowl: KitchenAid 4 5 Quart Stainless Steel Bowl

All of these are great home use units, all the attachments are interchangeable between these. The difference between these mixers is the K5 is a 5 quart mixer and the K45 is a 4.5 quart mixer. As I own both of them they are great in the kitchen and have the same durability.

sounds like you need a new bowl lift cam, on the n-50 which is a hobart table-top model pull top off pedestle, you will see the cam you have to remove one cotter pin and remove one split pin install new cam reassemble

This may have a simple solution: This sounds like an issue of beater to bowl adjustment, which can come out of alignment naturally over time and with use of the machine.

If the flat beater is striking the bottom of your bowl, this may cause the locking mechanism to loosen and may cause the mixing head to "bounce" during use.

Your Use and Care Guide will cover the "beater to bowl adjustment," which you can do at home in a few minutes with a flathead screwdriver.
