Maybe the cables are not connected, they may be disattached to the hard disk or optical drive. You can try opening the bottom of your laptop, it usually has a hard disk vent, when you unscrew the cover, you'd see the hard disk, and you could connect it. If this doesn't help, the boot manager of the OS might be corrupted, you should insert your setup disk and choose start up repair.

Wont go past first screen

First try this unplug from AC, remove battery, plug in try to boot normally. If that fails Open BIOS, Boot Order or the BOOT MENU, Boot from HDD first, and save changes and reboot, if that fails try a system restore/recovery.

My gateway says "Check cable connection!PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. No bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key". What should I do?

Sounds like the hard drive isn't getting power, the data cable to the drive isn't connected,or the drive controller on the motherboard is toast(I'm a novice tinkerer, not an expert).

Pxe-m0f : Exiting intel pxe rom

First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.
