Looks like a nice bike to ride everywhere and as an urban commuter I would love to ride it in traffic instead of using a road bike or commuter type. If you need more speed in town or want to compete, a road bike might be better. A mountain bike will probably last longer than a road bike under all driving conditions.
Are you in love with TD-One parts or would an upgrade to almost anything Shimano be a possibility? Look on eBay. A Pacific Bicycle or any bike sold by a department store isn't really what one would consider an upgrade-worthy project. A new bike better might be cheaper considering labor costs. Replacement of parts for failure might be worthwhile.
It's prabably easier to buy a whole new hub. And for ablout another $20 you get a whole new tire. You should do that. Have a bike shop do it because it can be tricky.
As much as you can stand. For the first-time mountain bike buyer, the cost of mountain bikes may be a bit shocking. As a general rule, you'll pay the following: Junk hardtail < $300 Light-use hardtail $300-500 Intermediate hardtail $500-800 Race-ready hardtail $800-2,000 Boutique hardtail $2,000+ Junk full-suspension < $800 Light-use full-suspension $800-1,500 Intermediate full-suspension $1,500-2,000 High-end full-suspension $2,000+
Well that's a hard problem to solve without having the bike here, not hearing the noise. Make sure your chain is lubricated (with bike chain oil, not WD40), because this is the foremost cause of weird bike noises in my experience. The other thing, is it a Target/Wal-Mart/CostCo/Etc bike? these bikes have REALLY inferior parts and they will indeed squeak and squeal.
im certain that model has a 3 piece crank set up. the inner crank bearing jam nut has loosened up or the bearings themselves have gone bad.first check to see if its tight, if it is then it will require a replacement set of bearing that are a pretty standard size to all bikes and can be purchased at nearly every bike shop.
