I have this ASUS P4GE-MX Motherboard. I want to upgrade my ram from DDR 256 MB TO DDR 1 GB. For temporary purpose, I tried another 256 DDR ram with 400 MHZ, but I had some problem with booting my system. So can you please help me with what kind of RAM I should go for and in particular, does this motherboards work only on RAM with certain clock speed. I am currently using DDR 256 MB with 266MHZ RAM.

Hi:) That mother board take PC2700/333Mhz and PC2100/266Mhz and PC1600/200Mhz SDRAM up to 1Gig in each slot 2Gig in total but you can not mix up the clock speeds if you are using 266Mhz stay with that clock speed.So if you want to upgrade use the 2 X 1Gig PC2700 at 333Mhz that is the most you can run in that machine.

says to use PC2700 (333MHz), PC2100 (266MHz), or even PC1600. You should be able to use PC3200 (400MHz) as long as it is unbuffered and _non-ECC_, up to 1G per stick x 2 slots for a total of 2G. It just won't run at 400 MHz.

If the memory that you tried to use was ECC it will _not_ work. Also, memory slots can be fickle at times, and you may need to remove and re-seat the memory sticks a few times before they make good contact.

Download it, right click it to extract the files, and burn the ISO to a CD with Image Burn:

You maybe have upgrade your bios to support the ram type.

It does also help to upgrade the drivers there is outdated.

Flashing it with the wrong bios will destroy the mainboard !!!!!!

According to the user manual found here this board can use 2 x 184 pin DDR DIMM sockets for up to 2GB unbuffered non-ecc PC2700/2100/PC1600 SDRAM memory.

Ram is recommended at being intalled in pairs. You cannot mix different types I.E. DDR with DDR2. It has to be the same type. Also you cant put 2 sticks of different values I.E. 256mb with a 512mb. One of the sticks would have to be paired with another stick of the same value. Example: 256+256 and then 512. The easiest thing for me that ive used is go to memorystock.com and scan your computer. It will tell you how much you can put and how much it costs.

This motherboard only has 2 memory slots DDR333 Mhz for a max 2GB RAM. You should only use DDR333 Mhz (DDR266 if is compatible) but do not mix it.

Hello, The Motherboard's specifications mention that it uses DDR Ram, while the FSB runs at 400MHz. That means that any kind of DDR memory will work up to the maximum of 2 GB (it has 2 slots, so it's up to the max of 2x1GB DDR sticks).
There's no issue with the speed, actually the faster you can get the better results you will have. Try looking for 1GB DDR 400MHz (preferably two of them, if you want to max out the capacity and since it's kind of cheap to do so).
The one you tried and didn't work, might be due to a faulty RAM module.
