Cant create additional raid

Have an IBM X226 server 8448 1BM with 4 x 73GB U320 drives mirrored to give 2 logical drives. Added 2 x 146GB drives and can't create another raid. Is there a limit on the number the controller can handle

Hi martyblue
Check this for specs:

The raid controller onboard is dual channel. Are you using a serveraid card as well? How have you configured the existing arrays? You may need to use the other channel if not already in use. Are the new drives ultra320 drives of same speed?

Windows server 2008 raid setup on a dell poweredge 2850

2 drives indicates they are RAID 1, which are mirrored. 2 x 36GB = 36GB. This is an industry standard config. If you make any changes you will lose the array making it RAID 0 (no RAID - no longer hot swap), and or the complete loss of OS / data.

Instead make another logical drive for data storage. You need three or four drives to set up as RAID 5, again an industry standard config.

Make sure to back up in all instances. GL

In my IBM X226 server 2 HDD became unavailable in RAID 5 configuration. now I have replaced the hard disks and rebuild process is continuing. 1962 operating system not found error message is being shown...

Raid level 5 gives you some redundancy in your raid however it only allows you to lose one hard drive, two hdd lost would not permit to recover from. the parity bit can rebuild one hard drive but not two, sorry your raid might be lost

Confuguring raid5

Hi

You would need 4 Hard disk drives in total. you would need to create 2 RAID 0 (striping) and then Mirror them (RAID 1). to elaborate, HDD A&B will be at RAID 0 as well as HDD C&D. after, you would have to Mirror your two RAID 0. (raid 0+1 is also known as raid 5)

Hope this helps.

there must be some key on the startup to enter into the raid menu. And in that raid menu you can create raid .

Raid configuration

When your system boots up you should see an option to access your raid controller if not or if your system doesn't see the controller at all you will have to download the utility software from IBM, but you need to be careful any change you make in the configuration of the disks will delete all data on your drives. This is non-recoverable loss. The utility has help and is fairly easy to understand.
