We can't hear spoken audio on our recent dvds (movies), only the music. Some of the the older movies are fine.

That TV has a lot of audio adjustments on it. Try changing the equalizer settings in the mid range. You may also want to see what it does when you hook something else to it and check the sound. If all else fails you can try the digital audio connection to see if that is clear. Otherwise you may to replace the audio board.

that sounds strange. your receiver is not that smart to work out the differences between movie and music dvd. more info would be good.

Laptop's are not known for there sound, the smaller the laptop the smaller the speakers are by design. It sounds like everything is working correctly to me. Voices / spoken dialogue should mostly be from the front speakers and surround audio (music, effects, etc) from all speakers.

The TV screen is in front of you so the people on the TV screen are also (technically) in front of you. Naturally, I would expect the spoken dialogue to come from the front speakers only - except in some instances, where dialogue in the movie is from a character not currently on screen. If you had voices from both in front of and behind you when the characters are only in front of you, it would be totally disorientating.

If you have audio from all five speakers during a movie then all of your connections and settings are correct. The problem you are describing is really just a description of how surround sound works.

I also had this problem. I read elsewhere that this happens when your TV's audio setting are set to surround sound when you don't actually have a 5-speaker system. I changed the settings to regular stereo and it fixed the problem perfectly.

you have probaly changed audio tracks on the dvd,just go to menu and audio,and pick another audio track,a lot of DVDs come with more than 1 audio track (im talking the actual DVD not the player

I had this same problem and checked all of my cables and wires. Come to find out one of the wires that connected to the central audio speaker (the one that the audio track comes from) was unplugged. I plugged it in and that fixed it! My audio track is back! So make sure that all of the speaker cables are properly connected! That might be the source of your troubles!

This was probably caused by an update,just reinstall your DVD encoder/decoder software.

If you are only hearing part of the audio from your DVD player, I would suggest you check your audio settings before seeking repairs.

Audio can be encoded to a DVD in several ways. If the audio on the disc is different than the settings on your DVD player, you may not hear all of the audio layers. For example, if your DVD is encoded in 5.1 Surround Sound, but your DVD player is set only to play basic Stereo, you may only hear portions of the audio.

Try accessing the menu on your DVD player, and look for the audio settings. If there is a higher setting available than is currently selected, try a higher audio setting. A higher setting should also be compatible with lower types of audio encoding.

It seems the Denon and PS3 don't play nice together on DTS. If you take off the DTS setting, then the PS3 will use DD and you'll get surround for games and movies.
