Freezer works fine, fridge compartment cools but has stopped cooling as good and has recently stopped cooling. did a manuel defrost on fridge and freezer worked fine afterwards, now doing the same thing again. this occurred in a two week period. have been told it is probably defrost switch or element. if this is the case what can i expect the repairs to cost and are the repairs simple enough to do myself. there is some frost build uo in the freezer along the back wall.

Oncce the fridge was shut off and left for a while the cooling had come back . If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
If after about 6 hours you observe cooling it is possible that the defrost timer is faulty.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
replace the defrost timer, heater or thermostat one you have confirmed to eliminate one by one.

My 5 year old GE GSH22JSRSS Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator recently stopped cooling. I noticed a build up of frost on the freezer, so unplugged the fridge and let the ice melt away. After this,...

The problem you describe is that your defrost circuit has failed. The fridge should stop the compressor periodically and turn on the defrost heater to melt the frost buildup. Since the frost in building up on your coils, the fan can't blow the cold air into the fridge compartment. It defrost is controlled by a module that turns on the heater. Most of these failures have to do with the defrost heating element burning out. It can be replaced by someone who has some mechanical ability.

The coil and heater is located in the back of the freezer compartment behind the panel in the back. You can obtain parts from appliance repair outlet or online like appliancepartspros.com or repairclinic.com.

I have a 13 month old apartment size Magic Chef refrige. It stopped geting cold about 1 month age. I uplugged and it work fine for until now. Same thing. Left it unplugged for a while and now it works...

The fault is very much with the auto defrosting of your fridge. When the firdge stops cooling you are unplugging the fridge to allow it to defrost. As there is so much frost in the cooling coils there will not be any convection of the cool air from the coil as it gets blocked. So after defrost the coils get cleared and works fine till the next time frost appears. So first of all remove the freezer compartment rear covers to access the cooling coils, check for break in wires to thermostat, to the deffrosting heater or open coils in the heaters. Now trace the wires to the defrosting timer which is a 8 hours timer for defrosting the coils by the heaters. You can see if the timer is working. Now one of these could be the culprit but you will have to make sure by testing each one and confirming before replacing. Please do this step by step. Hope you get it right. If not familiar get help. Good day

Zanussi fridge compartment has stopped cooling but freezer is ok

How to check everything

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp .

OR.
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

GE Profile - Fridge Doesn't Cool But Freezer Works Fine

Had a similar problem with my Kenwood Fridge Freezer
If you're mechanically minded you could check if there's an opening and motorised flap (usually behind a cover) at the top of the fridge - Cold air from the freezer enters the fridge through this flap) The Sound you heard could have been the motor trying to open / close this flap. This flap can become frozen in the closed position - so cold air is unable to enter the fridge compartment) My fix was to thaw it with a hairdryer and reassemble. Another fix would be to empty the freezer and open the doors - it might take more than 24 hours but once completely defrosted if the flap is the issue it will have defrosted. Once plugged in again the door will open and cold air will start to flow into the fridge compartment. I had a quote for €195 for a call out / repair
I fixed it myself in an hour - Hope it works for you ...
