If the USB dongle is bad and not working, I recommend contacting the manufacturer for a warranty replacement.

You write to the company and ask if you can get one, best option is to buy a new wirelss mouse since they are pretty cheap, most likely the replacement receiver will cost nearly as much as the whole thing.

I've had this wireless mouse for 3 months (microsoft wireless mobile mouse 4000). it just stopped working. the battery is fresh (the red light is still on) and the transmitter is still firmly in the usb...

When you replace the Battery on a Wireless Mouse you have to link the Mouse again with your USB receiver. There should be a Button on the bottom of the Mouse that could be marked, Reset, or Link or something similar. Just turn on your Mouse and hold this Button for a few second until the USB receiver finds the signal.

Wireless mouse 4000

You don't! Why do you need to open it.
Not sure what the problem is but try this.
Normal 0 Try disconnecting the Mouse from the USB port and reinstall the CD software program. When the program asks you to connect the Mouse to the USB port, do so and it should work.
Hope this helps. Bud

Microsoft Wireless Mouse and Windows Vista

I'm having pretty much the same problem with my Microsoft Wireless 4000 mouse and my hp-compaq 8510p laptop. If I shut my machine down, or restart, my mouse no longer works. I have to uninstall/reinstall the Intellipoint software. The synaptics touch pad continues to work, but the mouse fails.

KVM GCS1734 with microsoft wireless mouse/keybrd 4000

The MS keyboard & mouse receiver is effectively a USB hub with two devices connected to it. So, plugging it into the keyboard socket on the KVM switch may well work, depending on how that particular switch implements USB. If it just passes things through, it should be OK. On the PC side you should only need to plug in the USB cable from the switch's keyboard port.
