Loosing cd/dvd completely from device manager

Acer aspire 9302, windows vista HP, optiarc cd/dvd drive - this drive disappears in front of my eyes from the device manager listing. i can occasionally restore it with a windows installation disk, but not long after i use the drive it then fails - doesnt keep the drivers and drops out of the device manager list. i recently suffered a system crash and reloaded windows vista, but am experiencing the above problem. i have already done the 'filters' trick in registry - they are no longer present!! i have however lost 'Acer' functions on the laptop.

    superbbq

tks for the post - you may have been right on the 'loose' suggestion. although it did not appear or feel loose, since i applied some pressure to it, the drive appears to be stable and appears and works correctly. So until it disappears - pls accept my thanks. (ps was in bios)

I have an Acer Aspire 5332 and the CD-Rom/DVD Drive (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7580S ATA Device) is not working properly...every time I put a disk of any kind (i.e CD/DVD/Game) it doesnt recognize it and load

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver

you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope this helps you

Windows vista updated and now my optiarc dvd rw drive won't work

You will have to uninstall the drive and reinstall again. I think the drivers for the drive is not properly installed. But if all this does not work, then I think you will have to do a system restore.

Best wishes

Disappearing DVD driver

Use device manager to remove the dvd/cd unit, and then reboot the computer. Vista will locate the unit and install the driver.

It is possible that the dvd/cd unit has failed and requires repair or replacement

CANNOT FIND CD/DVD DRIVE ON ACER ASPIRE 5100

Is the hardware listed in the BIOS? When the computer first starts up hit a key to get in the BIOS (Esc, F2 or F10 are most likely). If it's not listed in the BIOS then it's likely a hardware problem. Try checking the connections to make sure it's plugged in and getting power.

If it is listed in the BIOS, it's likely a problem within Windows. Check Acer's website for known issues with the cd-rom.
