ahs could be the brushes they are pretty easy to check. On the rear of the motor should be 2 access screw covers carefully remove them and slowly remove each brush. if they are worn more than halfway I would replace them. Now I have seen your problem caused by dirty or worn speed pot. The speed control pot is fairly inexpensive to buy and easy to replace. If you have an ohm meter you can ohm it out checking for erratic meter movement as you slowly turn the knob. you should get a smooth increase or decrease in the meter as you turn the pot up or down.
