My oreck upright model xl3640 is not turning on. A clothespin was accidently vacuumed up, and the machine was immediately turned off to remove it. The bottom panel of the machine was taken off to remove the clothespin and to make sure that there were no remaining loose pieces in the spinning unit of the vacuum. When the machine was turned back on again, it no longer worked. All the leads are attached to the motor, and I am curious how to discern whether the problem is a motor that needs to be replaced due to strain on the motor, or if it is just a fluke timing of the power switch going bad.

My Oreck XL vacuum was goign along just fine and then it turned off. Tried several different outlets, nada. There was not noise or smell prior.

A common problem with orecks is that the cord shorts out as well as the plug. with you model the switch is at the base of the vacuum so it wouldnt be the switch. the best idea would be to take it in to an Authorized Oreck Dealer. I know at my stores we dont charge for service estimates. if it is the cord we could confirm it. but it cost about $50 for a brand new cord and the labor to install it.

My Oreck XL vacuum does not have enough suction to pick up dirt. Any suggestions to remedy this problem? The belt is strong, the bag is not full, and there do not seem to be any obstructions.

Turn the machine on and be sure the bag expands quickly and fully like a balloon. If the bag does not fill with air, or is soft, there is probably an obstruction inside the handle tube or fan housing. Disassemble the handle to check for blockage, or remove the bottom plate to check the inlet to the motor fan.

My Oreck vacuum cleaner will only stay on in the upright position. If I try to recline it to vacuum, it shuts off...put it back up and it turns back on. Of course I can't vacuum in the upright...

it sound as if you have a short in the cord or it has come loose from the motor you can take it part by removing the four screws in the buttom of the base plate to see if any of the wires are loose.

Simply won't turn on!

I believe all Oreck vacuums have a lifetime warranty. You should pursue that.

Oreck upright hard to push

If hard to push, only a few things to check:

(1) Rear wheels will get hair or thread wrapped around axles, dust, etc. and be hard to turn. Make sure each wheel turns easily.

(2) Small wheels on newer models (since about 1997-98) toward front are worn, missing or have same problem as item 1.

(3) Brush roll not turning. The brush roll actually helps pull this unit along the floor, as it rotates in the "forward" direction. If the belt broke, and you do not realize it, it may suddenly seem harder to push.

Stopped running

orecks have a plastic fan inside and everything you pick up hits it, sometimes things can get stuck in there or break the fan locking up the motor. With the machine off, poke around where the dirt goes into the motor, behind the roller and see if you can pull anything out.

Oreck XL9100 Brush clogged with hair

The pulley will turn off, then the end will pull off. Some of the replacement brush rolls, the pulley may be pressed on and may or may not come off with out ruining the end.
