All electronics after assembly, there is a lite oily glaze that is aplied the prevent any contamination from moisture. Its a bit unplesant, but not harmfull. Also, for an Element, make sure you registure the product so your warrenty will be in affect.Your most likely gonna need it, their a relativly new company.

"NO SIGNAL "is displayed on a blue screen

You have selected an input on the display that is not getting any signal that the display can recognize. Press the source button either on the set or on the remote until you get a signal.

Wondering if 40 inch 1080 LCD element was a good buy?

Not a great brand, generally when out of warranty, you are on your own. No repair except by independant shops if they will even touch it - no manuals or parts that they can get... Considered a disposable set.

My dad has an element LCD tv that won't turn on. I

Looking is one thing and testing is another. You will have to check for the 5 volt standby on the power supply then check for activity from the micro to turn the power on to the run state.

Hooking up head set

I went over the Manual for your TV, Sadly, it doesn't have a port for headset. It only has one audio output port for the stereo system call Digital audio out. The port on the back of the TV has a one for the size of a headset jack. But, it's only for the PC audio in port.

I wish there was some other way to hook up the headset for your son. But, the only option I see is to take the TV back and get one that has the headset port.
Sorry I couldn't help you out more. :(

We are told that this tv will not work after june 12 because it

Whoever told you that is an idiot.

After June 12, try rescanning channels, some of the stations changed their frequencies.

It is a 720p, 1080i DTV.

Dark screen- No images- some shadows horizontally

If you get a blank LCD, dimly lightened by a whitish back light, then the LCD display eis either faulty, badly connected, or the ribbon connector to LCD is defective.
The camera must be taken apart, ribbon cable tested, and eventually replaced and adjusted.
If all contacts on ribbon cable return continuity (cable is fine), then LCD is faulty, and must be replaced.
Althought the job is not too difficult, an user without experience may damage the camera in attempting this repair.
My first suggestion is always taking the unit to a camera shop.
