How long before this happens? A few minutes?

Check your power saving options on the pc. Sometimes power saving modes can try to help your PC but end up getting corrupt or frozen with other applications running.

Also check screensaver mode for anything that shouldn't be set. Try turning off both, any and all power options and screensaver options and what results do you get?

If nothing helps, something else is creating this problem such as a program running.

You need to check your power settings. It is being set to go to turn of the drivers after a certain amount of time.

Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options Then change the power options so it does not shut off the hard drive.

When it goes to black screen, it probably means that it is on standby or hibernate mode. Just press anything in the keyboard to boot it up. About the crashes, take note of the application that is running when it crashes so you can determine the cause..

PNY GeForce GT440 crashes every time I play a video game.

Hello try to renew the graphic driver from here:

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

By selecting the model, and your windows system.

You can also use the auto find function.

By installing a small bit of software.

Maybe your power supply is too small for gaming performance
consider to upgrade that, if the driver update does not work.
I suggest a 500 watt PSU, so the graphic does not runs out of power.

Good luck

Well, my computer sometimes starts up normally but sometimes when im in the middle of what im doing it turns to a black backround and a blue box shows in the center of the screen it says something about...

This is Probably the BSOD i.e. Blue screen of death error...
1. Uninstall any programs that you had installed recently. Sometimes, there is a conflict in drivers installed on your computer that causes the blue screen error to pop up. In most cases, this does not happen, but if it does, Windows provides you a roll back feature where you can bring your PC's operating system back to its original functioning state.
2. Random Access Memory is faulty. When the Random Access Memory is faulty, the PC stops functioning everytime that area of the RAM is accessed by the CPU. This causes your PC to halt almost at Random. A simple process of elminination is just to remove 1 stick of RAM and see if the problem goes away. If it does, your PC is fixed!
3. Registry Errors Over time, the registry of your windows gets cluttered with tons of information. If you experience slow down in your PC during boot up times, opening up of new folders, surfing windows, its likely your registry has a ton of information it needs to wade through. That being the case, its a good idea to get a good registry cleaner and improve the performance speed of your PC. Errors fixed in your registry can also prevent Blue screen error crashes.

It went black but the power is still on

Computer Crash
One of the more complicated reasons why laptop screen goes black is a crash. This could occur for a variety of reasons and is often very difficult to fix. You will have to take the machine to a computer repair shop, and they will open up the laptop there to find the cause. Needless to say, this could set you back by a few hundred dollars as well. The crash could be caused by overheating, or maybe even a loose power supply cable. One solution for you is to play an audio file if the laptop screen goes black. If it does not play at all then something is wrong with the entire system, but if the audio file plays then it is just the laptop screen that is troubled.

Virus
There are a few computer viruses that can cause this problem, but most antivirus programs can effectively deal with such a virus. Update your antivirus software regularly and make sure you download all possible firmwares, and this sort of virus will be successfully thwarted. If your machine is infected with such a virus then your video drivers will most certainly be affected, and even your video card could get contaminated. All this results in your computer screen going black, and in some instances, your laptop screen may even go blue.

Drivers and Programs
The video drivers are crucial for making the computer monitor function properly. On some occasions though, these programs can stop functioning due to some reason. If your laptop screen goes black after startup on a consistent basis, then maybe it is your video drivers that are malfunctioning. To avoid this situation, you should constantly upgrade your video drivers, and should also refrain from using pirated video drivers. Spend those extra bucks on getting licensed drivers, and you will save a lot of unnecessary expenditure in the future. Read more on how to upgrade laptop video card.

My computer has a virus I can't remove

Try and boot into windows safe mode by pressing the F8 key before windows loads and then try running the browser and check if it crashes. Perform the same process by scanning with an anti virus and see what happens. You might have two problems, either the RAM the actual memory is bust or something in the OS has gone really wrong and got the OS unstable. Try the safe mode test to confirm.

Monitor

Sounds like you may have a bug, you could try re-ionstalling everything fresh, it may need a driver update. Check the funtcion keys. Sometimes you can turn up the screen contrast by holding the function key and hiiting the function key that looks like a white and black sun, Black is for darkewer, white is for brighter.

Also, ost laptops when on battery power, will auto dim to save battery power.

Notebook System Crash

Hey there SeanJohn79, have you tried hooking an external monitor to your laptop. You can move the video output back and forth, from external, LCD + external, LCD using Fn + F7. Hopefully this will allow you to see the necessary info for diagnosing the problem. Good Luck. Keep us posted! In case you are not aware, these are some display related key functions:
Fn + F3 = turn off lcd
Fn + F8 =Switch computer screen size
Fn + F12 =Hibernation mode, power for 4 secs releases.
Fn + F4 = Standby mode, press Fn key to return to normal
If you haven't tried switching some of these, give it a shot.

Monitor (Dell 1701FP) flickers, flashes and goes black

Just to check - when the screen is black- can you see any image- in its un-illuminated state. To do this look sideways along the screen not straight at it. I suspect this is an inverter problem. Whether or not this is repairable I know not- depending on your local repair facilities Perhaps DELL can suggest a local agent.
