The DV6000 series of notebooks are known to have problematic motherboards. Try the below options:

1) Hold the power button down for 5 second and the machine should shutdown. Then power on again.

or

2) Flip the laptop over and switch the "lock" switch to "unlock". Then flip the release button to remove the battery for a few seconds. Put the battery back in and try to power the laptop on.

or

3) Power on the notebook like normal. Watch the Hard Drive activity light (the one that looks like 3 stacked plates), if the screen is blank and the activity light is solid or flashing, you know that the LCD screen is bad and needs to be replaced. If that light is not flashing then the problem is your motherboard and it needs to be replaced. Call HP and ask them if your model was part of a DV6000 series recall, if so your repair costs might be covered.

Leave the laptop on, does it make the sound it does when windows starts up but screen still blank / black? tilt your screen uptowards the light, can you see anything just slightly. If so the back light bulb has blown and they are a nightmare to fix and expensive to repair. If this sounds right to you how old is your laptop? hope this helps and please let me know

My laptop has been in storage for several months now and i was looking to have it restored for my daughter but i cannot remember my password & my hint is not helping me

If you have an administrator account (even if you don't try putting in Administrator and leave password field blank) try using that account to reset the password, otherwise try one of the following:
- see this for XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305
- or this for Vista/Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/What-to-do-if-you-forget-your-Windows-password
- or if anything else didn't work you can use thrid party software from Hiren's Boot CD to reset the password. Here is the link to download it and burn it on a blank CD http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/Hirens.BootCD.12.0.zip

Did it display any video at all with boot options or HP logo? Any POST test or beeps after you started the laptop?
Try removing the power ac adapter and battery. then only boot it up with just the AC adapter (no battery).

The connecting data bus between ur laptop monitor and ur motherboard has either been at fault or else there has been some problem with the wire connection between the two......i.e it has been loosen up....

Get ur laptop checked from the hp representative and if possible get ur laptop insured under different laptop policy schemes.....
