Computer will not boot all the time. Getting worse. Have to do a cold boot and it may start up. Boot failure will not recognize hard drive but BIOS will. I changed the hard drive about 6 mths ago. I upgrade to latest BIOS. I checked boot order in BIOS and seemed ok. When computer loads properly it seems to be normal until it reboots itself. currently running win7 64 bit 8 meg ram 600w power supply. I pulled all non-essential compoenents off MOBO and it did not help. I gave it to a repair shop and they "think" it might be the MOBO and the hard drive. I was hoping it was just a BIOS setting. I do not think hard drive is problem. Any suggestions? Any way to test MOBO? Help!

It doesn't appear to be a RAM or CPU problem. It could be the motherboard (maybe the SATA controller), or the hard drive. There are two thinkg you can try:

1 - connect the hard drive to another SATA port, and change the boot order in the BIOS to point to the new port. If it works then it's a problem of that specific port. (motherboard problem)

2 - connect the hard drive to another SATA port on another controller. If you have the hard drive connected to a red port, try a black port. If it's connected to a black port, try a red port. If it works then it's the controller. (motherboard problem)

3 - try to install the OS on another hard drive and connect just that hard drive. If it works, then it's an hard drive problem, and you can replace that.

Hi,
from the symptoms you describe, it seems like either your PSU or your MOBO is not working properly. I don't think the issue is HD-related, but you can try to run some test, give a look here to find the tools that best suits your hard drive: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/tophddiag.htm . To verify if your PSU is fine, you can either use a voltmeter (only if you have some experience with electronics and such) by jumpin the PW_ON and GND pin of the ATX cable, or you can run a stress test (like OCCT and such) and see if it can handle your rig (ie, if your PC reboots after a couple of minutes that the test started, it most likely means your PSU is not working). Testing a motherboard instead is quite more difficult: you can either try it on a different working pc or look for sign of burnout and broken capacitators on it. Another thing you could try, is running your pc without its case, ie completely disassemble your pc and then reassemble it on a workbench to see if it works.Let me know if anything works!
Hope it helped,
Franz

You need to check both in BIOS by pressing F key during boot. First check to see if HD is there. If OK, then change Optical drive to first boot, save and reboot.

How can I a boot disk system failure on my Asus without a system disc?

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

My friend droped her notebook and now when she turns it on it just beeps and tells her to reboot and select proper boot device.what is boot device?

boot device means anything you can boot from (eg hard drive, CD, flash stick, etc). If your getting that message its most likely because it isn't recognizing the hard drive. You can try to take the back off and make sure the hard drive didn't get knocked loose, but depending on how big of a drop it suffered, it might have broke the glass platters.

PXE-E61 media failure when i start up my computer

The PXE-E61 failure is a failure to boot to the network card, this generally indicates a problem with the hard disk drive.
  1. Boot to the BIOS and reset the defaults
  2. Reseat the hard drive
  3. Boot to Windows CD and run CHKDSK /R on HDD
If the system will not boot to the HDD, but it is seen in BIOS, then the HDD may have an OS issue, if not detected in BIOS HDD likely has failed.

Hi,

Start the computer and hit the F2 key until you get into the BIOS. When in the BIOS you can see in the Main/general page whether the hard drive is seen by the system. You will see HDD (hard drive) CD-ROM which is the optical disk drive.
If you see the hard drive the look for boot options in the tabs. When you get to boot options set the HDD as the first boot device, save the settings and exit the BIOS.

Hopefully the laptop will restart and boot from the hard drive, thus into Windows.

If the hard drive is not seen in the BIOS then the hard drive has failed and needs replacing.
If you have a BIOS password then start the computer hit F12 repeatedly until you see the boot option menu and choose the HDD.

Regards.

Need an manual every time i turn computeron a message asks for a boot disk!

The computer is asking for a boot disk because it cannot see your hard drive. Check the bios to be sure that the BIOS is recognizing your hard disk. If it is, then you may have a hard disk failure or a motherboard failure.

If you go out to ASUS's website you can download a user manual by putting in your model number, etc...
