Is your phone rooted? For most mods this is a requirement

You have to change the software (programming) that runs on your phone (hardware - physical electronics). That is done by loading the software into the memory of the phone. If you load software that includes English text strings - it puts up English text strings on the screen of the phone.

There is, for example, a 'stable' release of Cyanogen Mod 10.1.3 available for that phone (with English text) at... http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=stable&device=i9100. That would run an open version of Android "Jelly Bean".

If you have never programmed software into a device before, this may not be the best choice for something to learn on. Resetting that phone to load the software, if done incorrectly, can cause it to 'brick' - become frozen. But if you are patient, thoughtful, strong - you will need a cable and a computer and you can follow the instructions on the Cyanogen Wiki.

Download Unlock root pro from http://www.unlockroot.com/download.html and install it on your computer and then run the program and connect your phone the pc.
Make you activate USB debugging in developer options on your phone.
Unlock root pro identifies your phone and then click on root
thats it
Your phone is rooted :)
Note: Install Kies before doing all this in order to ensure that the your phone drivers are installed on your pc

How to pair and then connect to a Bluetooth device on your T-Mobile G1 Google smartphone.
1. First, ensure Bluetooth is enabled.
2. From the Home screen, press Menu.

6. The G1 starts searching for Bluetooth devices in range. Select the device when it appears.
7. Type the PIN for the device.
8. The device should then pair with the G1. You can then select the device name to connect.
Bluetooth only supports ad2p profiles for headsets, music, and sharing of contacts and pictures. This is limited by VZ. Until the phone is rooted, there is absolutely no way around this. You cannot send files other than contacts and pictures via bluetooth.

It sucks... I know. I am in the same boat. I am [im]patiently waiting for the droid to be rooted so I can use bluetooth to share files between two droids.

You will most probably need to root your phone. You can try an app like S2D, but I think it needs to have the phone rooted.
I am running Cyanogen mod on my HTC and it has the option of moving the apps built in, altough still some data remains on the phone.
You will find more information in android forums. XDA forum is a good one.

Since you are rooted, you can load a custom ROM that has ringtones. A popular ROM for the G1 is Cyanogenmod. An easier way to get ringtones onto the phone, however, is to simply put whatever video and ringtones you want onto a microSD card and load it into the G1. Once you load the microSD card, the ringtones will be available in Settings -> Sounds and the Videos will show up in the Video application.

Call up tmobile, do not tell them you have a rooted phone or that it was modified in anyway, otherwise they will blame it. They will be able to help you get it working by modifying / adding some settings in your phone.

did you root it before ? if so maybe returning the phone to rc29 will help. this will restore your phone back to firmware 1.0 then to you can update it back to donut 1.6.

your phone booted up into the g1 bootloader screen, if you want to be able to use the phone again you will have to probably push the rc29 recovery.img then manually upgrade back to whatever rom you are on

P.S you will lose your pictures but you wont lose your contacts because once you sign in to gmail on the phone it automatically retrieves the contacts that were on the phone
