When we send a fax the receiving party indicates their copy has faded patches and also a line through the page. If my scanner is dirty how can it be cleaned and if the scanner is not functional what does a new one cost? Thanks

Sometimes you may see vertical streaks/black lines on the faxes you receive. Either your FAX/MFC's primary corona wire for printing may be dirty, or the sending party's fax scanner may be dirty. Clean your primary corona wire (see pages 13-18), or ask the sender to make a copy to see if the problem is with the sending machine. Cleaning the Drum Unit We recommend you place the drum unit on a drop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering toner. 1 Carefully turn the drum unit upside down. 2 Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the tab from right to left several times. 3 Return the tab to the Home position ( ) before reinstalling the drum unit.

Return the tab and snap it into the Home position, (Caution: If the tab is not at the Home position, printed pages may have vertical stripes). 3. Reinstall the drum unit into the machine. 4. Close the front cover. 5. Plug in the power cord first, and then plug in the telephone cord. or ask the sender to make a copy to see if the problem is with the sending machine. Try receiving from another fax machine. If the problem continues, call Brother Customer Service at: 1-800-284-4329 (in USA) or 1-877-BROTHER (in Canada).
Most likely a fax has been sent or a page copied with 'white out' (Liquid Paper), still wet on the page. As the page feeds over the scanner, (a narrow strip of glass that runs across the width of the page along the feed path) the wet liquid paper comes off on the glass as a thin line and dries. Thereafter, when copying, scanning or sending a fax, the scanner light does not go through the liquid paper streak and the result when printed is a thin vertical line that runs the full length of the page. If this is the cause you will also find that faxes you send to other people will also have this line (although faxes you receive are not affected by this problem with your machine).
To fix the problem: follow the path that the paper travels when sending a fax or making a copy, until you find the scanner (narrow glass strip). Take a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of methylated spirit (or white spirit) and remove the now dried Liquid Paper from the glass. Clean the whole strip ensuring that the glass is left clean and dry.
Make a copy with your fax machine. If your scanner is bad you should have a similar problem making copies. The same scanner is used to make a copy as is used to scan and send a fax. If the copy comes out bad your scanner is either dirty or bad. If you can see your copy but it just has a few lines running vertically up and down the page then you need to clean the scanner glass. This is a small strip of glass in the port where you feed it your originals.
Good Luck
Faxing is fine , when sending or receiving ?
any way I do not think you need to clean the scanner . if you can send a fax and other party can get the fax your scanner is ok . If not you need to replace the scanners light which is a glass looking bar close to your document feeder
This is an indication the scanner is dirty. Try cleaning the scanner. There are products that have cleaner in them where you simply have to send the treated paper through the scanner.
Hi
If you have lines when faxing out it cant be the drum,If you have lines with copy and receiving faxes then it can be the drum.
I think you problem is a dirty scanner glass.Check the glass and clean.
Received fax is unreadable or blurry Please go through the checklist below to see if the suggested action(s) can resolve the issue.
* Make sure the copy function is working well. * Print a Clean nozzle page from the Maintenance menu. If the printout has unexpected white or color horizontal streaks or missing portions, print the Clean nozzle page again. If you are still experiencing streaks or mission portions, you may need to replace your cartridge(s). * The cartridges may need to be aligned. * You may need to ask the sender to increase their fax quality.
Sent fax is unreadable or blurry.
1. If the receiving party indicates that the fax output is unreadable or blurry, you may want to try increasing the fax quality. 2. Check the scanner glass for excess amounts of smudges and/or fingerprints. If the scanner glass needs cleaning, moisten a clean, lint-free cloth and gently wipe the scanner glass. Make sure the scanner glass is dry before scanning the next document.
