Unplug your monitor from the computer and the wall outlet and let it sit for a few minutes. Reconnect. If your still having problems then try connecting your monitor to another computer if you can. If it does not work, I'm afraid it's time to get a new monitor.
If it does work on another computer, but not your current computer, your video card on your computer may have gone bad.
Yes, you should be able to use the laptop to test it.
Plugged in the monitor cable to the laptop and the fixya pages came up (I only plugged in the large cable that links to the desktop - there was another cable in addition to the power cable, a smaller, square one just under a centimetre wide that I had no port for in the laptop).
Can I connect the desktop to the monitor on the laptop do you know?
No you can not connect the desktop to the laptop (unless it has an input port, which I've never seen. ) If the monitor is working with your laptop, and not your desktop, that means your video card might be loose or has gone bad.
Thanks for the help. will send it to the menders!

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried unplugging and reconnecting and still got the problem. The windows login page flashed up for about half a second and then disappeared into blackness.
I dont have another monitor but do have a laptop - is it ok to connect to the laptop?
