Tape fails to return to cassette when cassette removed.

DAT cassette upon removal from TCD-D100 has about 3 inches of tape left outside the cassette. Happens every time, with different tapes of different brands, since it started. Please advise how to fix.

Left Deck Door Stuck Shut on Cassette Deck

Hi what has happened is when you pressed play the tape head that reads the tape has come up as normal this locks the door as you cant open it when its playing but instead of the tape head releasing and going back down into start possition it has become jammed in the tape itself.
You have two options turn off at mains and give it a gentle bang a couple of times this might free the tape and let the head go back to start possition its upto you how hard you tap it but doing this usually works and will allow you to get the tape out failing this then its going to be a case of stripping it down till you can get access to the tape head and be able to free it from the tape allowing door to open let me know how you get on ok and if you need further assistance

How to change the correction tape?

Changing the Correction Tape

1) Move the print carrier to the center of the platen using the SPACE or BS key.

2) To replace the correction tape, lift out the typing ribbon cassette (see Changing The Ribbon Cassette) and remove the two spools of the lift off tape by pulling them outwards.

3) Place the empty spool of new tape on the left pin so that the tape winds clockwise. Place the tape around the left guide. Pull the tape around the right

guide and place the loaded spool on the right pin so that the tape unwinds counter-clockwise.

Note: Make sure the sticky side of the tape is facing the platen.

4) Manually turn the left-hand spool in the clockwise direction, tightening the tape until resistance is felt.

5) Replace the typing ribbon cassette.
6) Press the CODE + = (SETTING) key.

Changing the Ribbon Cassette

1) Move the print carrier to the center of the platen using the SPACE or BS key.

2) Hold the ribbon cassette on both sides and lift up the front portion (where the ribbon is exposed) to remove the cassette.

3) To insert a new cassette, place the back end of the cassette on the cassette

holder on the carrier and gently press down on the front of the cassette unit it clicks into place.

4) Turn the ribbon feed knob counter-clockwise again to take up any slack in the ribbon.
5) Presss the CODE + = (SETTING) key.

Good Luck!

The tape broke. How do I get it reconnected?

is the tape outside the cassette? or inside the case itself (if inside we have to open and connect it to reel) but outside you need the paper thin masking tape 1/2 to 1 inch wide (cellophane is to thick)...now take both ends of tape..the tape on left side cut a 1/8 inch (hold in left hand cut on a diagonal toward the left)..(just FYI this is called splicing) now the right one cut it about 1/8 inch also in the same manner toward the left)..now cut a 1/2 inch of masking place on table...place the right tape on tape leaving at least half for the other part to go on....now take the scissors cut off any excess masking tape on both edges of tape...this should help get your first job at hand done....recording to dvd....have fun

The DAT machine needs new belts and maybe some cleaning. These fail all the time due to old belts that lose the tension that is required.

Distortion!

did you record them on the same unit?
It may be an alignment problem.
If it's the same unit, try cleaning the heads.
There are dat cleaning tapes too, but they beat on the heads.

Repair Sony DAT Walkman?

The "solution" by techman appears to be entirely inappropriate because the link he posts takes one to a company that repairs data storage units, NOT Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorders.
