Wireless Printers I'm thinking about buying a wireless printer. If I do so, will I need a cable to connect it to the computer at all? How do I go about setting it up? I'm not sure if you have to have the cable for initial setup or not. Also, will the printer have to be compatible with every computer on the router, or can it just be compatible with one?

  • If you are using a Bluetooth printer, the first thing you need to do is to insert the Bluetooth Transmitter. It comes with the laptop's USB port. Transmitter helps your system to communicate with your system properly.
  • For Wi-Fi printer, turn your printer and thus connect it to your laptop using a USB port. As you do so, Windows will automatically detect the printer and its required drivers. And also install them properly.
  • If the software does not install automatically, click on Start button followed by clicking on Control Panel.
  • Next click on Add a Printer to Devices and Printers
  • Choose the wireless printer from the list and thus click on Next.
  • If you cannot find the printer on the list, look for its drivers on the internet after clicking on Windows Update. You can also insert the installation disk and thus click on the Have Disk button to install the drivers.
  • Replace the default name and save the printer with a new name.
  • Now the computer will start the installation process.
  • As the installation process completes, click on "Print a Test Page". This will help you to make sure whether the printer is working fine or not.
  • Finally, click on Finish button to complete the installation wizard.
  • Disconnect the USB cable after you Set up a Wireless Printer to a Toshiba Laptop.

I dont think you have the network set up in the correct way. You should be using a wireless router. If it is a 4 port router, your computer network cable should be in port number 1, the printer can be be wireless or cabled into port 2 of the router. This way you have the internet and can still print wirelessly to the printer and so can anyone else.

We are moving and need the MP530 to operate wireless and wish to buy the interface through the router; does a (say) five year old MP530 support a wireless interface?

This model printer has only an USB printer connection.
To connect this printer to a wireless network, you need additional equipment, a print server with an USB pirnter connection and then connect this printer server to a wireless router using a LAN cable.
It may be easier to purchase a new printer with wireless connectivity.

If you attach this printer to a desktop computer with a network card and you have a wireless router.
Then you set up the printer as a shared printer and connect the desktop to the wireless router with a LAN cable. To send a print from your laptop then the printer and desktop computer need to be switched on.
If you let me know what equipment you have got then I can advise you the most cost effective way for you to set up a network printer.

Sometimes Printers loose connections because the wireless security is set to high for it's capabilities. If you know how to lower the security settings for your wireless connection - this may fix your problem.

Wireless printing impossible . How can I solve it?

Hi Paul,

Am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your printer is not a wireless printer by default. If you would like to be able to print wirelessly and have a bluetooth connection on your laptop/desktop, you have the option of buying an adapter.

The HP bt300 wireless printer adapter uses Bluetooth wireless technology allowing you to print without using a cable. In general, Bluetooth wireless technology is a short range wireless technology that allows connection between devices without requiring a cable. By using your HP bt300, printing is possible from a camera phone, PDA, digital camera, or computer (currently to a computer using the Windows operating system only) to selected HP printers.

Unfortunately, this adapter runs about 145-153$ not including shipping or handling. Am probably giving myself a two star rating by saying this, but your best bet might be to just purchase a wireless printer. I have a wireless 3-in-1 (scan/fax/print) that I bought for about 120$ and it works like a dream. Check out your local Office Depot or Best Buy and take a look.

Hope this helps!

Connection to laptop

Most printers are connected to laptops via the USB ports. If the printer is supposed to be wireless, then you may have to connect the laptop via the USB port so you can activate the wireless port.

Option1: Install both USB printers on the desktop computer, and then share them. Your laptops will be able to connect to them, but only when the desktop is turned on.

Option2: Buy a wireless print server, (Available from D-Link, LInksys, HP, etc) and use that to connect your USB printers wirelessly.

If you also want to wirelessly connect the desktop to your network, purchase either a USB, or PCI Wireless NIC for it.
