First make sure that your garmin does have a removable battery, then if it does slide the plastic lock on the side or back of the GPS handheld and see if it pops off
Note: some garmin modles you may have to slide the lock and pull at the same time hope this helps!

Determine that you do have a Garmin GPS with a replaceable battery. Find the information by checking the manual or with a close inspection of the back and sides of the GPS unit. GPS units that have a battery that can be replaced by the owner will have a battery cover lock on the back or side; it looks like a small sliding piece of plastic with slots or ridges.

  • 2 Open and remove the battery cover by sliding the battery cover lock and pulling off the battery cover. In some models, you may have to hold the lock up while simultaneously pulling the battery cover off.
  • 3 Remove the battery by sliding the battery out of the battery cavity. You may need to use gentle pressure to get it to slide out.
  • 4 Put the new battery in by sliding it into the battery compartment. Line up the metal contacts on the battery with the metal contacts in the battery compartment to make sure it is properly installed.
  • 5 Click the battery cover back into place. The battery cover lock should automatically lock and secure the cover. If this does not happen automatically, slide the lock back to the locked position.

Does your Garmin Nuvi 1300 Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

    1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
    2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
    3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
    Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

    1. Power the unit off.
    2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
    3. Install the battery.
    4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
    5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears.
    6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 1300 series GPS unit.

    I hope that helps.
