The DVD is finalized and can be played in the Sylvania recorder. Also I have a power DVD player already installed in my computer and I can see or play all other DVD.

  • cbrignoni Feb 28, 2011

I can not fixed the problem. As you said, I played the dvr-r in my other computer and the problem is the same.

Both computer said that "The disk is empty", no video can be read or play. Why?

I can play in both PC others DVR very well. And I can play the DVD-R very well in TV with the Sylvania recorder but not in my pc.

I install the cnet software you said but is the same situation. The recorded DVD in Sylvania recorder can not be seen. Others DVD can been played.

My owners manual says that the "Recorded Signal - digital video (MPEG2)" and also says that "output signal format: NTCS color". Can this information help you to solve my problem?

Try downloading VLC MEDIA PLAYER onto your computer and try playing the DVD-R with that application. I use that application to play all my DVDs and it works very well, and best of all it's completely free.

You can read about, check out user reviews, and download the program for free from CNET.COM at the following direct link:

Just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated.

Recorded DVD-R should be finalize first in the recorder to make the DVD-R playable in your PC.
On the manual of your Sylvania recorder find the steps on finalizing the disc after completing the recording.
You also must have a DVD player software installed in your PC in order to play it. There is a limit format of files that a windows media player can play in windows. Suggested player is PowerDVD player that can be downloaded free in the internet.

Good luck!

if that is the case, you should try to play the dvd-r on other PC with DVD rom (for us to verify if your dvd-rom can not read the dvd-r disc. If the dvd-r disc played on other dvd-rom then the lens of your current dvd-rom could be needing a cleening.

Figure the way to access the lens, using a cotton bud moistened with alcohol.

I have a sylvania VHS/DVD-R recorder/player. I recorded home videos to dvd-r/cd, but after I copy/burn the videos to a blank cd using my PC, I get a cannot play, remove disk error notice.

Did you finalize the DVD before you removed it from the VCR/DVD recorder? Until a disc is finalized, it won't work on another device. If you left some space, try to finalize it now. Does the disc play when in that Sylvania unit? It is possible that the unit is faulty and didn't focus the laser properly for writing to the DVD. (If you actually tried to burn to a CD and not a DVD-R, then no data was written to the disc. There are slight differences to the laser settings for CDs and DVDs.)

I hope this helps.

Why won't the DVD-RW disks FORMAT? I've seen others with the same problem with formatting multiple types of disks... Please help.

If you are using a Sylvania DV220SL8 DVD Player \ VCR combo (which this question is posted under the heading of) there is a very simple reason why you can't format DVD-RW disks. DVD Players can't do that. You need a DVD Recorder to format DVD's.

This applies to all comments under this heading as well. You can not record if the unit you're using does not have that capability. And this unit does not have it. You can record with the VHS VCR, but the DVD Player is just that... A Player. It's not a Recorder.

Sylvania DV220SL8 won't play DVDs, DVD tray won't open

One simple solution is to unplug the unit for 30 seconds then plug it back in. Worked like a charm for me.
