Samsung microwave smh9187 error 5E or SE what to do?

  • 2 more comments
  • Anonymous Feb 16, 2013

We have a Samsung SMH9187 that we have owned for two years. As it is in our second home, it is used very rarely. Today, we noticed the infamous SE code after using the microwave. At first, the microwave responded by turning on and off on its own volition, as if possessed. Unplugging and plugging the unit in resulted in the code being displayed, and the keypad becoming un operational. I removed the keypad using instructions provided here and elsewhere and quickly noticed that the ribbon cable was infact folded and touching on itself. A small sliver of paper towel was carefully inserted into the fold. Five minutes later, the panel was reinstalled, and hey presto; it works just like new. And I saved myself the cost of a new panel and a service call! Thanks to all who contributed.

Hi, I had the same problem and in my case the fix was easy. First the root cause: there is a ribbon cable inside the microwave that connects the control panel to the keypad, which is kind of folded. Over time, condensation will make two pieces of the ribbon cable stuck together, causing short circuit. The solution is to separate the pieces and put a piece of paper in between. First you need to access the control panel by unscrewing the top grill of the microwave. After removing the top grill, you will see a screw holding the control panel to the oven. Just unscrew that one and remove the control panel. You will then see the ribbon cable. Inspect whether it is folded and the two sides are stuck. If yes, just separate them and put a piece of paper in-between.

If you're handy, this above approach worked. It is only removing three screws (two to the top grill, 1 to the control panel - easy) Thanks Victor!

Hi all, my solution was to call Samsung support. The SE error is a known issue which they will repair for FREE, if the problem is with the keyboard, cable or wiring. If it's the actual box you will have to pay. The service repair person will let you know the cost. Mine was FREE.

Had same problem and got it fixed. Thanks to Victor and YouTube. After opening found that the ribbon cables are stuck together. I inserted a paper where the ribbon folds s..t. It doesn't touch each other. Also did a cleaning with blowing air, from a bicycle hand pump( didn't have a air duster available).

Also have the dreaded SE code. Called Samsung, Yes it is covered under extended warranty. (This is an indication they know it's a poor design/manufacture.) Samsung repeatedly indicated it was covered as long as it was the touchpad. Tech from A&E arrived this morning, told me up front this was a service call I was expected to pay for, at about $120 in labor, but the part was free. I explained that Samsung had repeatedly assured me the labor was included. The tech smiled and said that this happens all the time with Samsung and the SE issue. He said unless I was willing to spend the $120, he would have to leave & reschedule. He left about 15 minutes ago. I was also told he would have to come back again after Samsung told A&E it was a no charge situation. And he would have to confirm it needed to be replaced, THEN ORDER THE PART, and come back again at a later date. Samsung did not provide the part, nor did A&E even have the part on the truck. Now waiting for Samsung to return my call. Since I am self-employed & it cost me more than twice the cost of a new microwave (in lost income) for 3 visits, I am probably going to buy the part myself, install it, make sure it works, then pull the entire unit out, replace it with a NON SAMSUNG product, and list it on Craig's List cheap!

I made a call to Samsung due to this SE error code. I mentioned that I thought it might be a "known issue." within 24 hours they had sent a technician to our home to replace the board. Fast and Free...I could not have been more pleased with their service.

SOURCE: kenmore microwave model number 401.80084700 Displaying -SE-/-5E-

-SE- error means you have a shorted membrane keypad.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and of course one should never leave a microwave unattended while cooking.

There are three ways you can get it fixed:

DE34-00178X SWITCH MEMBRANE $20.30
ref#53 membrane keypad
take yours off as in the video at our site, peel the old keypad off as in this handy guide with pictures , clean the surface, stick on the new keypad
order by part number here
(We can do this job for you for a total of $70.25, but as you can see, the other two options are more practical and economical)

DE94-01647A ASY CONTROL PANEL $39.01
ref#66 control panel frame with keypad
take yours off as in the video at our site, disconnect the keypad strip as shown here, move your circuit board to the new frame, reinstall
order by part number here

DE94-01648A ASY CONTROL, BOX $58.12
ref#59 complete control panel assembly with frame, keypad and circuit board
take yours off as in the video at our site, then install the new one
order by part number here

If these parts are not in stock, they should be available in about a week or so.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Samsung microwave -5E-ERROR

The " SE " error is reported by the microwave's software whenever one or more keys on the keypad are pressed or shorted for more than 60 seconds. An "SE" condition can result in the microwave oven running on its own, which can result (and has allegedly resulted) in house fires.

Why samsung smh9187w door will not latch

Had the same problem on my Samsung SMH9187. The two latches are cheap plastic. After watching a video on U tube on how to get the door apart, I fixed it with a paper clip and ordered the parts online (two years later I still have the paper clip holding the plastic latch in place). Look for the SE error to happen next, its not made very good.

Samsung Microwave SMH9187 error message (?) 5E

You can do this without removing unit from wall. First unplug unit. Next remove the two screws on the top of the unit closest to the front. These screws simply keep the up facing vent in place. Next slide the vent to the left (plastic latches on bottom hold in place) to allow vent to be removed. You should now see a single screw above the control panel. Remove it then open the microwave door. Gently slide the control panel up which will disengage the plastic latches on the panel sides. Suggest if you are going to remove the controller and replace take a picture before removing it so you know exactly how to reconnect all the wires.

My SMH9151W Samsung Microwave displays a -SE- or a -5E- and will not operate. I unplugged over night and still will not operate

I had the same issue on a 2010 smh9151w samsung microwave after installing it and using it with no problem for 5 days. The second time we unplugged the microwave and turned the circuit breaker off and on we didn't reset the clock on the microwave so the display shows :0 and it has been working for 7 days straight now. Fingers crossed that this is a long term solution. Hope this helps. Thanks!
