It could be that the new version of skype is not compatible with the older ibook, what you can do is go to http://www.oldapps.com/mac/skype.php and download one which is compatible with the system you are currently using. It may be a case though that skype will require the newer version to work properly though. Hope this helps.
Make sure you have the right software first VLC is good software and will play almost everything.
Does your version iBook even have a DVD optical drive?
Is the optical drive failing?
mac doesn't support any data card till date so this is not working . if you want to connect it install windows using bootcamp then your problem will be solved.
