Frost buildup in frost free freezer

My friend's upright side-by-side fridge-freezer has a problem. It is making huge amounts of frost in the freezer, right around the place where ice is made, stored and dispensed. I don't know the make and model but not terribly old - around 10-12 years??? She says it'll even build up so big it prevents ice from going down the dispenser. She lives north of Houston and she says she thinks this is a "summertime problem." I thought it might be because of a worn seal on the door? How to test that?

Thanks,
NKSavage

There is a defroster built into the ice maker to melt the ice a little around the edges before dispensing on most ice makers it may need replacing.

What number should i set the upright freezer control

Thank you for your inquiry, friend!

Normally it is recommended to set your Frigidaire upright freezer to zero degrees. It is your option to make it cooler if you choose too. I hope this information has been helpful. -Matt

Why wont my freezer wont freeze everything else does

Try clearing all vents - inside (make sure vents not covered - in fridge and freezer) and outside (gently vacuum - the coil areas in the back and bottom of fridge)
Air needs to circulate in both parts (dependent on eachother)

Upright freezer shuts off and leaks when there is any kind of ice buildup. has done this twice in 7 months. is this normal or is it on its way out?

I suggest checking the defrost circuit. Make sure the drain in the back of the freezer is clear first. Then check the defrost timer, switch, and heating element using a volt meter. You can download a schematic from the Sears/Kenmore website.

Frost buildup in freezer

Remove the bottom panel from the front of the fridge. Look for a small motor with a screw slot in it. Turn the srewdriver slowly and only clockwise, until a click is heard. wait about 3-5 minutes and check if the walls of the freezer are getting warm. If they do all you need is a defrost timer. That's the thing you just activated, by the way. More often than not you can find them at the dump in the appliance pile, OR you may have just gotten it to work for another year. Keep a close eye. Top & middle shelves COVERED with frost/ice, not middle

That is normal. The refrigerant runs through those shelves. They are the evaporator side of the unit. That is where the freezing effect comes from.
Check door seals for leaking air.
Keep door openings to a minimum.
Get in there and get out.
Those things will help prolong frost/ice buildup.

Freezer has frost in back- frig not coolling

You have a defrost parts issue.
Unplug the fridge. Remove the back freezer panel and check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat.
Without a model number I can not tell you where the defrost timer is.

Check these two things first.  1.  Is there a thick frost buildup on the back panel at the bottom half of the freezer?  2.  Do you hear the fan running inside the freezer?  Let me know what you find.
