Burning smell from AC Unit

Of course it is a sunday night at 11:30 when our AC unit totally turned off, wall display monitor totally blank, and we are smelling a burning smell from the AC Unit. We called our AC service who told us they would be out in the morning. Is that okay??? My husband turned the breaker off in the garage, but we have a 5 year old and a 6 month old and are kind of afraid. I believe the smell is getting better, but any advice?

"Odor problems can be as serious as a gas leak or as simple as a dirty air filter. But remember, a good mechanic doesn't just use his hands. He uses his ears and nose. Unusual odors could indicate a serious problem and should not be ignored.

We will go through each of the five categories and list the possible causes and things to check.

1. Electrical odor - Electrical odors are usually caused by parts overheating. Indoor blower motors are a common example. If there is a mechanical failure such as the bearings seizing up, the motor over-heats and the insulation on the wires and the motor windings themselves start to melt, causing the odor.
Sometimes loose electrical connections cause wires or plastic relays to overheat causing electrical odors.

It is possible for a very dirty air filter to cause the odor. If the airflow is restricted enough, it could cause electric resistance heaters to overheat, even burn-out.

If you smell an electrical odor, check your air filter. If it is not blocked, shut off equipment at the breaker if possible and call for service.

2. Burning odor - This is similar to an electrical odor only worse. It is also sometimes accompanied by smoke. Once again, this can be caused by parts or wiring burning-up.

It can also be debri such as plastic getting into the ductwork and melting on the electric resistance heaters or heat exchanger.

If you smell a burning odor, check your air filter. If it is not blocked, shut off equipment at the breaker if possible and call for service.

3. Gas odor - First of all, if you really smell gas and suspect a gas leak, you should open the windows, get out of the house, then call the gas company.

Now excluding that "worse-case" scenario, if you notice an odor that smells like gas and it seems to be coming out of the supply vents, it usually isn't gas. Sometimes dust that settles on the heat exchanger during the summer months burns off at the beginning of each heating season and it smell just like gas.

If the odor doesn't seem to be coming from the vents, try to pinpoint where the smell is coming from. Use your nose. If it is gas, it usually would be from a leak in a pipe fitting or at the equipment itself.

Gas odor is the one that causes the most fear. People think of gas explosions or carbon-monoxide poisoning. Well, gas explosions are very rare and carbon-monoxide for the most part is odorless.

Having said that though, don't take a gas odor lightly. If you can't locate the source of the odor and you are worried you have a gas leak, remember, open the windows, get out of the house, then call the gas company.

4. Oil odor - Oil odors are usually caused by one of two things. An oil leak/drip or an oil burner that is not working properly.

The oil leak is usually easy to spot. Just look for oil. Check the burner itself, the oil tank, filter and oil line. Sometimes it is just a matter of tightening a fitting. If there are no signs of an oil leak then it is most likely a burner problem.

This can be caused by many things, too many to list. It could be a minor adjustment to the burner to a faulty or blocked chimney. From a bad fuel pump to a plugged oil nozzle. Listen for any unusual rumbling or banging sounds or smoke or soot while the burner is running. If you notice any of these things and/or you have an oil odor, you should call for service immediately.

One other common problem today is that new houses are insulated so well and are built so tight that they run out of combustion air, causing odor problems. In this case it is just a matter of bringing in a fresh air for the burner. Call your local Heating Company to assist in a proper diagnosis.

5. Damp and musty odor - This is more common in the air conditioning mode. Sometimes attic units or very damp basements have this problem. Check for air leaks in the return ducts. Check for water damage to the ducts or air handler itself. Possibly consider having your ducts cleaned. Run a dehumidifier and see if the odor goes away.

But this odor problem is almost never due to a problem with your equipment.

Final Tips:

Keep in mind that almost all heating systems cause an odor the first time they are fired-up. And the first few times at the beginning of each heating season. Brand new furnaces are coated with oil to keep the heat exchangers from rusting. This burns off, creating a bad odor - even smoke. But it usually only lasts for about 20 minutes. Opening the windows usually solves the problem. And the first few times the backup heat on a heat pump kicks on, it smells like an electrical smell. This might last for a few days but isn't that bad. If you are worried, call for service.

Remember to check for a clean air filter and that your vents are opened. Check to see if the fan is working which mean your motor hasn't burned-up.

Check for air leaks in damp areas, oil stains or rumbling sounds, strong gas odors - these all indicate problems. Do not ignore them.

Hope this helps, remember - these are just rough guidelines and not all possible situations are covered."

Error 03 is displayed

Error 3 means that the unit cannot power on and control the air pump -the unit itself is faulty. The screen is totally blank that means that the control processor in the main unit had malfunctioned.
You cannot fix the defective unit. Time to replace a new unit.

I have 3 central ac units for my house. 1 for the upstairs and 1 for the west side of house and 1 for the east side of house. just had a very cold night and the east side of house vents smelled like...

To make sure that there is not a problem with your blower test it on cool. if it runs good. then start the heater on auto and it should be okay. but still supervise the operation for about 5 mins. if you still smell something burning . then call an AC Technician for help.

E manchine e17tg turn on power you get just a

mrmadgbull, How long will e17tg display the WIN-desktop before it goes to BLACK screen? Is it 1, 2 ...4, 5.....20 seconds? How old is unit? Does unit have internal ac to dc SMPS or external (lay on floor) SMPS? Did problem occur suddenly? What do you see on screen after "it" goes black and you shine a bright flashlight 1 inch from screen? Can you still see some icons being faintly displayed?? Is unit out of it's warranty period? If lcd panel is both black and blank, "switch-mode-power-supply" could be in full shutdown mode. If you see desktop, SMPS is in partial shutdown mode. You or electronics technician will need to evaluate and repair unit. Read my FIXYA profile for more options you may have open to you. Your monitor no different than any other "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" backlit LCD monitor. There is a lot of DIY videos on YOUTUBE that deal with this type of monitor problem. Lots of tech types pick-up "black screen" lcd monitors at resale shops and refurbish them for less than $20 total cost, and they will work for another 2 -4 years. Do your research before making hasty decisions. If pocket is deep with disposable income, then just use e17tg as trade-in for new wide screen. Hope this was of some help. 12fixlouie

My hp l1706 wont stay on it goes blank after a few sec when turn on please help me out how can i stop this

huntpercell, You won't !! The unit's "switch-mode-power-supply" is in what is known as "SHUTDOWN" mode because it has detected a FAULT with itself or the "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp's" electronic ballast circuit which is called the INVERTER circuit which changes 12-15volts DC to 800-1200volts AC to light-up it's CCFL's to produce WHITE LIGHT so you can see all the pretty colors on the LCD panel!!! Do this test!! With KNOWN GOOD pc fully booted to WIN-desktop, reconnect l1706 to pc and wall outlet. Then and only then turn on the l1706. Make note of how long it takes to go to BLACK or BLANK screen. After screen shuts down then hold a bright flashlight 1" from the screen at different angles, looking very closely to see if the desktop is still being displayed very faintly even though the screen appears to be BLACK! Tell me what you see or don't see! If you don't see the desktop then SMPS is in total shutdown. If you see the desktop the SMPS is in partial shutdown but is still able to source +5 or +3.3v dc to the VGA/LCD interface board to send information to the LCD panel. You have just performed THE FLASHLIGHT TEST that every owner of a CCFL backlit LCD display should know how to do! Now here are your options as a CONSUMER / USER of a LCD display whoose screen is now dark and lifeless. 1. Trade it in for a NEW one. $$$$ 2. Swap-out unit for manufacturer refurbished unit. Cash +old unit. $$$ 3. Repair/refurb unit locally at TV/monitor shop. $$$ 4. Effect a repair on your own with info acquired via web. $ or poss $$ If 4 is of interest then get back to me. I will tell you of some good sites to visit. If you found this information helpful, please rate this on fixya. I'm louie12fix on fixya or [email protected] Bye.

It sounds like the blower motor has burnt up.(the one inside) The unit running for a few minutes then shutting off, is due to the high pressure/temperature safeties. When you removed the panels, did you notice any fan running?

DVD Tray will not open

I purchased this unit back in Mid November to make DVD's of my kids old VHS tapes. To date I have probably have made 400 DVD's. Sunday we came home from being gone all day and the unit was locked up. I tried the reset button, unplugged the unit etc to no avail. I unplugged the unit all Sunday night and looked at it again on Monday morning. I was ready to take the unit back to Best Buy and the unit ejected the DVD and has worked for 2 days (Recorded another dozen DVD's). Tonight while reading the paper a message came on my monitor that there was a problem with the disk and instructed me to push the "enter" button which shut the unit off and was suppose to recover the disc. The recorder is now locked up again. A number of 000000's flashes accross the display and the unit constantly cycles off/on. So it is trying to recover but is obviously not being successful. I am going to try the same thing tonight. I am not sure if I have a bad set of blank DVD's. They are Sony -DVD R, same ones I have been using all along. I do remember having this "Error" message when I first started this project and I had to unplug the unit to resolve but it didn't lock up and I haven't had any issues until Sunday. Seems like something in the software is screwed up. It is frustrating that there doesn't seem to be a manual way to eject the disk??!!

Burning smell from Microwave

If you clean any appliances always plug out the unit power supply do spray any liquid in the unit that can enter inside the control, instead just wipe it with rug not spray. In this situation you have to call for a qualified technician. Maybe there are some wires that burned or rust in the control that cause the short circuit inside the unit..
