you have to FORMAT the hard drive you can only format a hard drive from another disk

ok here goes, my neighbour has the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB, and in under 2 weeks it started to beep and was not reconized by any Laptop or P.C. if this is the same for you with any FreeAgent Desk series ( not GO series, different procedure for GO products). To make it easy just download a backup wizard

There is software preloaded on the disk. If you have AutoPlay turned off in your system, it won't start automatically when you connect the drive. Just go to MyComputer and open the drive and you will find a setup file there to install the backup software (I think it's called Launch.exe).

have you tried to disconnect it both your 80gb and 320 gb external? if so try to goto your system properties, then click the hardware button then the device manager button...there you will see the specs of your PC and try to check if there is and yellow ? symbol in that area. if there is check if what is port spsecialy your usb area
