Just cleaned mine this morning because it was so ridiculously sticky and dirty with great success with nail polish remover and cotton pads. Read this solution posted elsewhere but was worried about ruining the finish, and there are warnings on the bottle about not using it on plastics......but tried a bit on the back. Went very well and with a load of pads and alot of scrubbing, it came completely clean! No sticky residue left, no discolouration. Looks brand new!
Rubberized coatings or cases when exposed to handcremes.. suntan lotions.. or bug repellents will breakdown and get become sticky.. certain environmental situations can also cause the rubber either to breakdown and either get sticky.. or get hard and brittle..
Sounds like the radio has been handled or exposed to some type of petroleum based product as I mentioned in the first line... even sitting near certain uncapped distillates can result in this problem.
There is a product in the boating world called Speed Clean Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner that may solve your problem.. if succesful.. remember to apply some type of protectant afterwards.. most Boat dealers or marine and fishermen supply stores should carry this product.
The only other solution is to remove as much of the sticky coating with an ammonia based product and recover.
Good Luck
I had the same problem. The cure is to clean with laquer thinner (not paint thinner) the treat with a protectant like Armorall.
Same problem too. It would have been nice if the manufacturer had warned us about exposure to these things. After all, it is supposed to be a PORTABLE Radio; you know, outside and all. And what do you have outside and at the beach? Skin cremes, lotions, bug repellent. Manufacturer was not very smart. Maybe they don't go outdoors in Massachusetts.
