1998 VW GOLF GL 1.6 AUTO Problem: I would be grateful if someone could advise. The problem started with engine stalling at junctions & traffic lights. Over few months took it to local garage to get throttle body cleaned, fuel filter replaced, air filter checked, MAF sensor checked, but problem became worse with engine cuting-off frequently & doesn't fire unless car left for 4-5 minutes before re-starting. Took it to garage again, the mecanic mentioned that nothing is reported after checking VAM-COM. Presently it's been reported that mechanic can't see any spark or fuel to engine even after changing fuel pump relay, coil pack & battery. The starter works fine & lights come on as normal while starting, but engine doesn't fire. Please advise. Many thanks

I have no idea why your even asking any questions
about that VW

Replaced the clutch & still has problems---so you want to
buy someone elses problems?

Car won't start-- so you can part with your money & get
a car that you can't even start?

Could be electrical or something?

Your going off what the owner said---Ya & why is he
selling it--because he can't afford to or figure out how to
keep it going?

I know money may be an issue but you don't buy a 16 year
old car regardless of condition ,not even if it was free ,I wouldn't
take it.

Do you know anything about VW's or have a college degree
in automotive technology?

I have a 98 VW Golf (ABA engine) it keeps stalling at idle. I saw that it might be the mass air flow sensor, so I unplugged it and it smoothed out and ran great. I replaced the sensor and it still stalls....

Try cleaning throttle body with throttle body cleaning fluid. You can pick this up at any auto supply depot. Just follow the instructions on the spray.

2003 VW golf o2 sensor?

Yes, it could be something else, other than the converter, such as a faulty o2 sensor. Take your VW to Autozone or Advance auto, and ask them to a do a scan, to see what they come up with ( think it's free).

The parts aren't really that expensive, it's the labor these places charge an hour. Call around and see who can do it the cheapest, unless you want to do it your self.

VW Golf MK3 1996 P - Car cuts out when slowing down. Battery and Oil lights come on. Restart the car then starts juggering. Its not a fluid purring from the engine.

i would start by cleaning out the throttle body. they collect soot and not have to be a lot either for it to mess up the idle speed, i had trhis on mine soon as i dipped the clutch to slow down the rpm dropped to about 400 to stall, i cleaned throttle body out ( taking air intake off and wipe round inside and the butterfly will be enough) and now it idles and the rpm dont drop below 900
