First, be sure your bobbin is in correctly, place it with the thread running counter-clockwise (the tail will be off to the left), and drop it into the bobbin case. Pull the tail toward you and make sure it catches on the silver catch closest to you by pulling to your left then away from you (toward the feed dogs). You should now feel some tension on the thread, this is good.

Be sure the presser foot us up and the wheel is turned so the needle is at it's highest point (neutral), then put a spool of thread on the spool holder (behind the machine above the motor) with the thread catch (a little notch) to the right as you put it on. Put on the thread holder (a plastic donught that holds the spool in place). The spool should not move but the thread should come off of it freely.

Bring your thread through the plastic catch on the back of the machine (near the center) by passing it underneath and pulling upward and to the rear. Pull it to the front over the top of the machine and pass it through the bottom of the small metal holder (not the round part, that is for winding the bobbin). Bring it down in front of the machine to the tensioner, passing it around the bottom of the tensioner then pulling up so that the tension is engaged. Don't worry if you don't feel tension, that's normal if your presser foot is up and needle is at the top. Pull the thread up to the top of the machine and through the receiver then down toward the needle. There is a double loop just above the needle, thread through it then thread your needle front to back.

Be sure to pull up your bobbin thread and hold both threads as you start to sew.

SOURCE: how to thread the bobbin on a singer simple sewing machine

Drop-in bobbin: Note: thread must change direction when entering bobbin shuttle notch. Usually bobbin will turn counter-clockwise when threaded properly.

1. hold bobbin so that the tail of thread is facing to left.
2. drop bobbin into bobbin shuttle.
3. pull thread toward you.
4. guide thread into notch and pull to left so that slot engages thread.
5. pull thread diagonally across shuttle toward back of machine.
6. draw bobbin thread up through needle plate with threaded needle.

SOURCE: I have a Singer Touch N Sew Model 636. The

I had a Golden Touch 'N Sew many years ago and as the machine aged and parts became worn, step 4 of this bobbin winding diagram started to become a problem and I had to sometimes try several times before the "tabs" would release. If they did not release, the machine "thought" it was still winding the bobbin and would not sew.

I was sewing with my CG590 singer machine and then my needle broke. So I put in a new needle, and now it seems like it is hitting something when it goes down. What could this be and how do I fix it?

If the needle hit something (which is usually what happens when the needle breaks), it could very well have knocked the machine out of time. You can try installing another needle (make sure it is installed facing the correct direction) and see if that changes things. If it continues to hit something, you can search the internet for web sites and videos discussing "sewing machine timing" or take it for service.

Get the upper thread to pick up the bobbin thread?

A few more details could be help; I'm not sure if you'e unfamiliar with the process, or you do know how to do it, but the top thread won't catch. If you're unfamiliar with the process, you can download the user's manual free from the Singer sewing machine site--it's on page 26.

If you know the process, but can't catch the bobbin thread, there are several possibilities.. The first and most likely is your needle is not all the way up in the clamp, the flat part is not at the back, or the needle is bent. Loosen the clamp and use a needle nose pliers to grab it and make sure it's up as far as it can go, and the flat side is to the back of the machine.

The next possibility is the bobbin is either incorrectly inserted, or the end of the thread was not correctly inserted in the notch. Again, refer to your user's manual.

The last possibility is your timing has gone off. That will have to be corrected by a technician. It is rare that the timing goes off, though, and is usually the result of turning the hand wheel away from you too many times. Always turn it toward you.
