EDIT:
the problem is the nVidia GPU. it often overheats. there was a recall for this computer a while back. the recall has ended, but just so you know, you need to find a way to better cool the GPU. a copper shim between the GPU and the heat-sink will do wonders for you. apply Arctic Silver Thermal Epoxy to the shim and attach it to the heatsink. then, you need to use arctic silver 5 thermal paste on the GPU (about .2 grams should cover it) and reattach the heatsink to the board. while you are at it, replace the CPU thermal **** with the as5 thermal paste. my GPU is running now between 58 and 66 C. its really high still, yes, but the computer will not longer shut down because of overheat. get a laptop cooler for this thing too. it will not survive a hot summer day. i am absolutely positive.
it blocked the "C" word... wow. the other word for fecal matter. XD thats not cool
i JUST replaced the motherboard for this unit today. it works fine if you keep it colder. the problem was actually a blown charger circuit. someone a while back had a frayed cord and it eventually made the chips go BOOM. there was smoke residue in everything.... lol.

I had the same problem. This is how I reset my password on a compaq or hp nc6320.
1. unplug the power cord
2. unplug the battery
3. take two screws from the ram cover on the back of the laptop (see youtube for this step)
4. open the keyboard
5. unplug the cmos battery cable (very easy to do)
6. plug power cable and turn on the laptop
7. laptop would erase passwords.
8. put everything back together.
A pleasure to help.

1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the
computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on,
and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.
3. Disconnect the power cord.
4. Remove the battery pack by following these steps:
a. Turn the computer upside down with the front panel
toward you.
b. Slide and hold the battery release latch 1 to the left. (The
front edge of the battery pack disengages from the
computer.)
c. Lift the front edge of the battery pack 2 and swing it
back.
d. Remove the battery pack.
5. Remove the RTC battery from the socket on the system
board.
6. Wait approximately 5 minutes.
7. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the computer.
8. Connect AC power to the computer. Do not reinsert any
battery packs at this time.
9. Turn on the computer.
All passwords and all CMOS settings have been cleared.

First, remove the Battery Pack from the Notebook and reinsert it after an hour.
Also, press the F8 Key on the Keyboard while turning ON the Computer.
Next, please select "Last Known good Configuration" from the menu.
Ensure that the Booting Priority is set to HDD in the BIOS Settings and also turn OFF the Quick Boot feature. This should resolve the issue.
