More than likely the backlight is failing. If you can still see a VERY faint image on the screen this is almost certainly the problem. This is a very difficult fix. I recommend a replacement LCD.
It MIGHT be a bad lcd cable. With the laptop on, slowly open it from closed to open and back again and see if there is a position where the laptop screen does not flicker or turn off, [or if it does turn off if it turns back on.
If the screen goes COMPLETELY black then your GPU is failing.
Check the bottom ribbon cable is in the socket properly and firmly positioned into the ribbon socket. Check that the cable is not being shorted in any way. If the connection is fine then the bottom screen is failing and needs to be replaced.
Is could be your TV and not the PS3. When the resolution of the screen changes, you TV will flicker to adjust to the new resolution. My TV flickers in a similar way when playing games of lower resolution than my HDTV.
Was the DS dropped? Sounds like the top screen ribbon has become disconnected from the motherboard, or is broke. You may have to replace the top lcd screen.

Open the camera, look at the Flat-cable going from the CCD to the 'camera HW', there is a small connector where the latch mecanism is open,-meaning it does not put pressure on the commenctors and if you touch the flat-cable you can see the flicker/lines, simply use a pen tip to lock the connector latch again, or apply som glue to fix the connector.
