Possible dirty cartridge interface. Use a Q-Tip and alcohol and clean the interface on the cartridge. Hopefully this will fix your problem. Occasionally the games will corrupt and only partially work. (If this is the case more than likely the game got wet at some stage and the insides of the cartridge have battery leakage and corsion and can be fixed)
It sound like the color or the screen parts inside of the game boy color are not working properly so it would just be easier to buy a new one vs fixing the current one. The current one could be fixed but it might not be an easy fix and the fix might be complicated then.
Well technically there is no back light for gameboy colour but gameboy advance SP has a built in light to it then. You can play gameboy color and original gameboy games on an sp then.
Check on Ebay, u can get the TOP lcd if it's that... I have read on how to replace it, and u will need to desolder the 2 speakers from the lcd!, here is a page on how to dissasemble it!
