I have the same problem. Never could get a resolution from Kitchenaid, however, we avoid the burning smell by using the 'energy saving' dry cycle. Have you tried that?

If the burning smell is an electrical smell it could be motor or wiring problems which are best handled by a professional. If it smells like burning rubber it is probably the belt. If it smells like burnt wood it could be the belt slipping on the brush roll, if the brush roll is made of wood. Dust and debris can also accumulate behind the end caps of the brush roll causing friction which can cause a burning wood smell.
If it smells like burning a burning plastic/ceramic then your brakes are locking up and burning. Next time it does it, see if the smell is coming from the rear tire. if so, its time for a brake job
is it a burning rubber smell or a burning eletric smell. burning rubber smell will be a slipping belt. replace the belt and pullys. tighten belt. electic smell will be a bad thing. have tested by technition
If it smells like an incomplete combustion smell, clean the burner first. I'm assuming it used to work and now doesn't? If it never worked correctly it may have the wrong jet in it. There is a jet for propane and one for natural gas. They do not interchange. If it smells like plastic burning, something probably got past the screen and fell into the burner.
How long had it been plugged in when you started to smell the burn. What kind of burn do you smell, is it an electrical burning smell or a smoldering dust burning smell.
