Fridge Freezes Everything

there is a motor with a flapper that opens and closes to keep your temp correct in the refrigerator side most likely the motor is bad and stuck open so your air from the freezer has constant flow to the refr side. the flapper is in the back of the refr behind a cover where the air flows in.

Top 3 shelves don't freeze

Cold air sinks. If evaporator temp is not low enough only the items on bottom of freezer will get cold and possibly freeze - stuff on top will not.
Throw a digital thermometer in there towards the top shelves and I bet your temps are high. Low refrigerant will cause this; furthermore, if you leave the refrigerator door open by accident, the refrigerator will never shut off, the freezer evaporator will freeze over with a block of ice, and the freezer temps will be higher. If that is what happened, simply unplug the unit and allow it to self defrost and then turn it back on for proper operation and make sure that the refrigerator door is properly closed!

My whirlpool chest freezer runs but does not freeze?

Hello,

Fan problem is one of the most common reasons for the freezer to start failing, this is called "frost free failure." Ice can build up on the evaporator coils over time, and this ice builds up until it starts blocking the fan. The fan is responsible for circulating cold air throughout the freezer, so if it is blocked the freezer will not be able to freeze any food. You can usually check this by removing an access panel in the back of the freezer to inspect the coils. If ice is built up on the coils, a hairdryer can assist in defrosting them.

It's also possible that the fan is not running at all. If the fan is burned out or the motor isn't running, cold air can't circulate through the freezer and everything will melt. You can normally hear the fan motor switch on and off from time to time. Listen for it and if you can't hear it coming on for an extended period of time, the motor may need repair or replacement. The wires connecting to the fan may be the problem, preventing the fan from receiving electricity.

Several other problems could be keeping your freezer from freezing:

There could be leaks in one or several of the hoses in the refrigerator, which results in the cold air being lost instead of circulating properly throughout the fridge and freezer.

If you have the freezer so full that the cold air can't circulate, your food will thaw even though the freezer isn't malfunctioning. Always leave some space open in the freezer and try to not store food right up against the cooling vents.

The thermostat might have shorted out, which means the freezer can't accurately determine how cold it is. If this is the case, the refrigerator would probably not be working, either.

If your defrost drain becomes clogged, the water in the line will just refreeze over and over again, which could damage the lines as well as the fan. Always check the drain and make sure no sludge is building up in it if you have a self-defrosting refrigerator.

Always try to keep the freezer door closed for long periods of time. The more the door is opened, the more warm air is let in and cold air is released. If the door is opened frequently, the freezer could be warming faster than the fridge can cool it, which will thaw your food.

I hope this helps........

Best regards.

Msf-49nm will not stay below freezing!!

My next question is, you say you have to call a tech to come out. Is he doing something? And if so, what? With the limited info I have at this time, it sounds like there may be a refrigerant problem. Let me know so we can continue. Am looking forward to resolving this.

Leak inside my whirlpool fridge

I have the same problem with my Whirlpool Refrigerator. Sounds as though the unit is not going through it's defrost cycle properly.
I have narrowed it down to 2 things.
1) The Defrost Timer is bad and may need replacement.
2) The Defrost bar (located underneath the cooling coils in the freezer unit) is bad and may need replacement.

I would check to see if your timer is even running. You can tell by first locating it (could prove to be the hardest part) and look at the little winow on the front. You will see that the internal wheel is moving if it is operational.
Next remove the panels in the freezer unit and see if the drian hole is plugged with ice. That is what I found upon checking this.
I believe what was happening was that the coils would drip and freeze up over a breif period of time. Layer after layer would build up, plug the drain hole and any liquid would find the path of least resistance and flow with gravity. In this case, directly into the refrigerator section.
If this scenario is present, the heater bar may be bad. I only know one way to test that theory.

Frigidaire freezer, only 2 bottom slelfs freeze

If your freezer is six years old the compressor warranty is also over. Sounds as though the system has lost its refrigerant charge. A refrigerant leak in these smaller units is difficult to locate and somewhat expensive to repair. Your choice.
