have you tried the headphones on another device? cause this issue could be caused by many things
The underlying hum or static you hear is probably due to poor shielding on the audio jack, so the electromagnetic field produced by the hardware can cause interference. This could also be caused by a loose connection in the audio jack. This is actually a problem with all skull candy headphones of this kind. You can google it and see alot of people have this problem. Best to test it on 3 devices. If it works on the other 2 and not yours it is your device. If it does it on all 3 it is the headphones. If you just bought them skull candy headphones come with a 90 day warranty up to 1 year. if its in the first 30 days return them and either get a new pair or get your money back. If you need further assistance please feel free to follow up with a comment and i will be here to assist you. thanks and have a great day.
The way you described convinced me that your audio driver is OK, but the sound can be heard through the headphone only. If this is the case then you have a mechanical failure (metal fatigue) on the head phone jack assembly. I consists of two DPDT switches ganged together in a small housing with have 3mm jack on it. The leaf spring contacts failed to make after the headphone plug is detached. Only skilled technician can remove it from the PCB then sold an new one in.
Static shock can fry your sound card from electro static discharge and it can also fry other PC components try another set of headphones in the pack of the PC. Or another pair of speakers rather than using your monitor and see what happens.
if you are able to hear normally from the speakers and not from the headphones possible reasons could be: the audio is muted or very low there is a mute switch on the headphone that is turned on the headphone is not firmly plugged in or is in the wrong site eg microphone hope it helps please inform if it helps..
