BACKGROUND: The 7210 is on the same network as multiple computers, all of which are running Windows XP and all of which can print to the device. I just downloaded the mamma-jamma 450MB full feature device driver for networked connection directly from HP's web site, and the install seemed to go fine.
PROBLEM: When I try to scan, the LCD screen says "Select Computer" with a little right arrow. But pressing the right arrow doesn't do anything, and when I click the "OK" button it says "No scan options" and tells me I need to install device software.
Any suggestions?
From each computer, you need to run the HP Director. When opened, click on SETTINGS, then SCAN TO settings to configure. This way it will transfer data to the scanner so that when at the scanner, that computer will be in the list of places to send a scan job.
You may need to download the HP patch which is on the same page entitled: CRITICAL UPDATE TO RESOLVE AN ISSUE WITH HP DIRECTOR AFTER INSTALLING IE7.
You can get it here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...
But you should have an HP folder when you click START, PROGRAMS, HP. The fact that this folder is missing means the program didn't load properly.
The size of the file you need is over 450mb (496mb) so you may have downloaded the wrong file. But if you have IE7 on that machine, the above file may solve your problem. I had that issue one time but I had HP Director on my desktop, just wouldn't launch until I installed the patch. The fact that you don't even have the icon is troubling. Before doing anything else, uninstall the current HP drivers, reboot and try reinstalling. Make sure any firewalls are turned off. You can check by clicking START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SECURITY CENTER. If Firewall is enabled, click near the bottom where is says WINDOWS FIREWALL, and click on OFF, click OK to exit the screen.

Thanks. This is maddening, though, I can't find HP Director on my computer (no icon, not in start menu, not even in the "HP" directory under Program files) and can't find a way to download it. Seems like it's supposedly part of the driver package, but I downloaded/installed the driver earlier today yet HP Director is not on my system. When I installed the drivers it went through exactly the process documented athttp://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum... including the affirmative recognition of my 7210.
Any ideas on how to get HP Directory on my system? Now that you turned me on to that I see all kinds of problems you can fix once you take the first critical step of "Click the HP Director icon..." GAAHH!!!
