Apple Mac OS X Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 16, 2011

Hi, Went to the Mac store to upgrade to Snow Leopard and was told my OS was "way too Old to upgrade to Snow Leopard!" Sorry, I'm a numbskull when it comes to these things. Figured as long as my computer was working then I didn't need to keep upgrading. Now I'm in a pickle. Have Jaguar OS X but must have upgraded along the way since my "about this mac" says I have version 10.4.11 power pc not 10.2. What upgrade do I need to catch up in order to upgrade to Snow Leopard? Thanx!

This is not new information. I was already given that advise from a rep at the MAC store. My email to you clearly stated that I had Jaguar OS X10.2 on my "power PC" then must have upgraded to Tiger 10.4.11 along the way. So since I don't have an "intel" processor but a "power pc" processor then I can not use the "box set" you advise. Any other ideas?

    Thank You

  • Anonymous Feb 22, 2011

The first expert did not read my message accurately and gave me an inappropriate fix to my problem. My original MAC OS is JAGUAR 10.2 on a POWER PC processor MAC Mini. I must have upgraded to TIGER 10.4.1 somewhere along the way but I am still on a POWER PC processor. Please, how can I bring my OS up to speed in order to upgrade to Snow Leopard? The last expert did not pay attention to the details of my problem. Can YOU help me?Thank you!

I have responded to the original experts faulty answer to my problem and sent a request to a second expert for help with NO RESPONSE from either. I can only deduce that your service is a "racket". I will be sure to warn all of my friends to stay away from your service and will be reporting your lack of performance to the Better Business Bureau.

    Apple's latest version of the
Mac OS X operating system is 10.6, known as Snow
Leopard. For a list of system requirements for Mac OS X 10.6, see Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard
    - Technical Specifications
    .

Note: Before upgrading you should consult the
manufacturers of any third-party software and hardware you use to make
sure it will be compatible with the new operating system.

  • Anonymous Feb 28, 2011

To upgrade your operating system to Mac OSX 10.6 you will need first to upgrade to Mac OSX 10.5

  • Anonymous Feb 28, 2011

Use the Archive & Install way of initially installing Leopard.Once Leopard is running do not open any programs yet. Just open you favorite browser and down load the 10.5.1 Update and update it. When it reboots download the 10.5.6 Combo Update
and it will take you straight to the latest 10.5.6 version of Leopard.
Be patient because there will be a big security update inside the combo
that will reboot the Mac twice, this is normal. Once 10.5.6 is all done
then use Software Update to get the remaining updates.

Lastly get the free program AppFresh so it will find & point to all the program updates you applications will need to function in Leopard.

Hi Jack Can you help me as well? I've got the OS X 10.5.8 I live in South Africa, and it seems nobody (no apple shop) in SA can provide me with the upgrade, version 10.6 I've tried downloading it from the web, but to no avail. Where can I access the update to download as the US does not ship this to SA.

Apple recommends that if you wish to go from 10.4 to 10.6 then you should purchase the 10.6 Box Set.

System Requirements to run Snow Leopard:

  • Mac computer with an Intel processor
  • 1GB of memory
  • 5GB of available disk space
  • DVD drive for installation
Snow Leopard Installation Instructions:
  1. Just insert the DVD in the optical drive.
  2. Restart your Mac while holding down the C key.
  3. You will be guided through the installation procedure and be prompted at one point to choose which install option you want.
  4. Once the Snow Leopard install is completed the Mac will restart itself.
  5. You will probably be asked to register with Apple upon restart.
  6. Enjoy Snow Leopard on your Mac!
Q: Can I upgrade directly from Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)?

A: Yes. Apple recommends purchasing the Mac Boxed Set for this purpose, which will also update iLife (it is unknown at the time of this writing whether older versions of iLife work with Snow Leopard) and iWork. Also note that while it has been said that the $29 upgrade will work with 10.4, it is not officially supported and may be in violation of the licensing terms.

Q: What happened to the different install options? Can't I do an Archive & Install?

A: Apple has revamped the familiar installation options for Mac OS X. You now have two choices, either a straight upgrade or a clean install. Supposedly if you choose to do a straight upgrade, what actually goes on behind the scenes is what was traditionally known as an Archive & Install.

Q: Is there anything I can do to better prepare myself for the upgrade?

A: Yes. It is advisable to run a Verify/Repair Permissions and Verify/Repair Disk in Disk Utility. You may also want to run the maintenance tasks in Onyx. And finally, it would be wise to get your applications up to date using a program like AppFresh.

You cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard without the Intel processor. Therefor you must get a Mac with an Intel processor if you would like to upgrade.

  • Anonymous Feb 28, 2011

I apologize if the information we gave you was not the information you wanted. Unfortunately, like I said before, you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard without the Intel processor. Therefor you must get a Mac with an Intel processor if you would like to upgrade. Contact Apple and they will tell you the same thing. There is no reason to be harsh just because Mac requires you to upgrade your hardware to upgrade to their latest OS. This is something you should talk to Apple about.

Like I said before, you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard without the Intel processor. I did read your post, I was just telling you that you cannot upgrade without the Intel processor, and you must upgrade your Mac.

I am running OS X 10.4.11 and would like to upgrade my operating system?

Please provide more information.
To what would you like to upgrade it?

Since OSX Mavericks was just announced, I'm going to assume that's what you're wanting to upgrade to.

Not all Macs can run Mavericks.

Mavericks Capable Macs

Mavericks, like its predecessor Mountain Lion, requires one of the following Macs with at least 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of available hard drive space:
  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

If your Mac isn't one of the ones listed above, you won't be able to upgrade.

If you have an iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, or Mac mini model that was originally released in Early/Mid 2006, the latest version of Mac OS X your system supports is Snow Leopard.

You will need to get an OS X installation DVD. Try eBay.Don't go for anything lower than 10.4 (Tiger)10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard) should run fine on this machine.Don't bother with 10.7 or 10.8
