thank you for posting this, I was having the same problem and the pen worked. You need to write to Uniden and ask for a reward, if they don't note that in their phones they are going to get a bunch of these returned.

Same thing was happening to my phone...Welcome! Please wait... After at least 40 hours of charging I was getting a little fed up. I picked up the handset, took a ball point pen and pushed the "activation" area on the bottom the phone...heard a click...now it is working. I don't think the tiny pin that comes with the phone activates the phone properly.
