Fahrenheat F2545 Electric Baseboard Heater Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 14, 2011

Bought a Fahrenheat 5' baseboard heater and a single pole thermostat to replace an old heater. What's the difference between a single and double pole thermostat? Which should I use? I have a 240v line (incoming black, white and bare ground wires). The wiring diagrams that came with the heater and thermostat are confusing to me. The power supply is at the right end of the heater. Does the thermostat have to be installed at the power supply end or can it be placed at either end? If I wire the thermostat into the right side (power supply side), which wires go together? I thought I had it right based on the diagram but the breaker is blowing.

Cadet baseboard heater

If I have your information right you have a black wire and a white wire marked red coming to the heater with 240 volts between them. You have a double pole unit mounted thermostat with a red and a black wire. Most double pole thermostats have two red and two black wires on them so I am not sure if you have a double or a single pole thermostat. There are also two wires going to the baseboard heater. One is connected to the element the other to a high limit switch which is then connected to the other end of the element. If the thermostat is a double pole the two red (or load) wires should connect one to each of the baseboard wires. The two black (line) wires should connect one each to the two incoming power leads. If it is a single pole thermostat the one red wire should connect to one of the baseboard wires the black should connect to one of the incoming power wires the remaining baseboard and power wires should then be connected together. Hope this helps

How do I know if I have 240v when replacing old baseboard heaters

When you turned off the power to the heaters was the breakers a double (2 pole ) one? If so, then yes, it defintely is 240v. There are very few 110v baseboard heaters out there anyway. The best way to check is to have an electric meter and check it out for sure. Actually if you are working on electrical circuits and you do not have an electric meter to check if you have them shut down for sure, you are on dangerous ground. Always be safe and check before working on any circuit.

How do I wire up a F2544 baseboard heater with a single pole themostat

It sounds like you are not getting the correct voltage for the heating element. If you wired a single pole thermostat, and its a 220v unit, then it will not get hot enough, like you are saying. If its a 220 heater, you need a 2p2t thermostat. The parts supplier will know what this means.

Electric baseboard heater

You need a meter, it will be hard without this! If you have 220v in the wall, then think of it like this; each wire is 120v. Test to each other, you get 220v. The thermostat is a double pole, you said. So think of it like this, its an adjustable temperature controlled switch that lets electricity through at the temp. you set it at. If you have 120v from one wire connected to one end of the element, and the other 120v connected to the other end of the element, then it will work. DO NOT CONNECT THE 120V TOGETHER. IT MUST GO THROUGH THE ELEMENT FIRST. The thermostat should be between the power from the wall and the element, to control the temperature.
