How do i re install windows xp on my compaq presario 5000

I guess not. Drivers for compaq presario 5000/8000, are not the same as those for a compaq presario 2175us laptop. Now, actually that "notebook" looks to me rather outdated. You won't lose anything by trying. Worst case, format hard drive and install Windows XP SP3. Try to search internet for missing drivers.

It seems that you are selecting the quick format option when installing Windows XP.
Try running the XP setup again and choose the option to format the hard drive with the NTFS option, but use the standard option & NOT the "quick" option.

what operating system have you got? You can load Windows XP clean on it and download drivers from hp.com . How much Ram have you got in the PC , maybe upgrade RAM?

can you please supply me with more detail. Do you get a blue screen when trying. are you trying to reformat the computer and putting a clean install of windows. is it XP or vista.

As you'll see the available software for these goes from XP back to Windows95.You might find that some of the XP drivers will work with Vista.

Is it Windows Xp with SP2? Better you have to use Windows XP sp2 with bootable cd. for that you have to select first boot as your CD rom. and then try. it will work 100% sure.

The Compaq Presario 5000 is not powerful enough to run Vista so XP is your best bet. I assume you have the standard 512MB RAM which will be fine for XP Once you outgrow that you'll need to go for more powerful hardware. By that time the new Windows 7 should have been officially released.

Sounds like you have 2 legitmate choices.

Either install WIndows ME on the system since that is the OS that shipped, or purchase and install a retail copy of Windows XP
